Neal Thomas McVay

Neal Thomas McVay, beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach and faithful servant of Jesus Christ, entered his eternal home on November 7, 2025, at the age of 78.
Born on January 22, 1947, in Logansport, Indiana to Adrian and Patricia Brown McVay, Neal was a man whose life reflected his deep love for the Lord and his steadfast devotion to his family, his students and the athletes he coached.
After living in and attending school in Cutler, Lafayette, Fulton, Kewanna, and Remington, Indiana and Whittier, California, Neal graduated from Monterey High School near Winamac, Indiana in 1965. Neal played baseball and basketball in school. Neal graduated from Wilmington College in Ohio in 1969. In 1970 he married the love of his life, Janet Felts, from Miami, Florida. Neal is survived by his wife, Janet of Tangier. They were married for 55 years and raised two sons, Curtis (Susan) McVay of Crawfordsville and Grant (Angela) McVay of Bloomingdale. He took great delight in his six grandchildren: Marlowe, Conner, Mason, Jenna, Cole and Lucas. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Jamison of Winamac, Indiana; brother, Craig McVay (Sue Burnam) of Columbus, Ohio; sister-in-law, Barbara Horvath of Toronto, Canada; Aunts, Mary Woods and Adrene Brown of Tangier; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Neal was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers-in-law, Stephen Felts, Ron Jamison, and John Horvath
Neal taught for 39 years including Graham High School in Ohio, Covington High School, Turkey Run Elementary and High School, spending the final 30 years at South Vermillion Middle School. At each of these schools, he also coached basketball. Following retirement from teaching in 2009, Coach McVay realized his life-long dream of becoming a varsity coach, coaching basketball at La Salette Academy in Georgetown, Illinois. Neal was an active member of Tangier Friends Church.
Neal will be remembered for his unwavering faith, integrity, his strong work ethic, his generosity, and his love of sports (with a strong dislike of the designated hitter and class basketball). He was dedicated to farming and keeping a well-mowed property.
Visitation will be Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Barnes and Rice Funeral Home, 111 East High Street, Rockville, Indiana. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at the Tangier Friends Church, 4020 County Road 1050 North, Kingman, Indiana,47952, with Tom Norris, officiating. Cremation has been chosen.
