Ned Melancon, 100, of Lake Charles, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Ned lived a life defined by adventure, service, music, and love. A proud United States military veteran, he honorably served his country during World War II and the Korean War. His dedication to service remained a source of great pride throughout his life.

Following his time in the military, Ned began a career as an offshore dispatcher, a line of work that placed him at the center of one of the most historic natural disasters in Southwest Louisiana. In 1957, Ned was the only survivor of Hurricane Audrey from his family. He lost his wife and two children, an experience that shaped his resilience and appreciation for life.

Shortly after that life-changing event, Ned met a woman who literally saved his life, Kathleen Melancon. Together, they shared 62 years of marriage, building a life filled with devotion, laughter, and enduring companionship.

Ned was an exceptionally talented musician, gifted with the ability to play nearly any instrument he picked up, including the guitar, mandolin, steel guitar, dobro, and harmonica. His deep love for Cajun music and performance led him to be inducted into the Cajun Music Hall of Fame, a testament to his lasting impact on the musical community. Through his passion for music, Ned traveled, performed, and experienced remarkable moments—including the unforgettable opportunity to meet Bing Crosby.

Music was not just a talent for Ned; it was a calling that opened doors, created friendships, and brought joy to countless people over the years.

Ned is survived by his niece Suzanne Murphree (Paul), and nephew Mike Melancon (Rose), and numerous cousins in the Lafayette area.

He is preceded in death by his first wife Candy Melancon and two children Jacqueline and Karl Melancon; his parents Alphonse Melancon, and Cecile Menard Melancon, and his brothers A Melancon, Spig Melancon, Lucille Domingue.

A funeral honoring Ned’s life will be held on Monday, January 19, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in Lake Charles, Louisiana, with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. and continuing until the start of the service.

A burial service will follow on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Prien Memorial Cemetery.

Ned Melancon will be remembered for his patriotism, musical legacy, strength of spirit, and the love he shared with his family and all who knew him. His century-long life leaves behind a story worth telling and a legacy that will endure for generations.
