Our beloved Mother and Grandmother, Nellie Leona Gilliam Walters, passed away Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at her home in Mount Gilead, Ohio, surrounded by her loving family at the age of 92. She was born on March 26, 1933, the daughter of the late Ira Lee and Marie Richmond Gilliam. She was born at the Head of Grassy (Harris), Lewis County, Kentucky.
Nellie was always rambunctious and quick witted living up to the reputation of redheads. Growing up as the fifth of 13 children, she took advantage of the opportunity to pull something on her siblings like starching her sister's underwear, helping her Dad raising tobacco; one time due to her shenanigans, she was left to hang in a gunny sack from the top of the tobacco barn. Nellie had a fierce love of family, and she always put her family first; she was an intricate part of their daily life. She and her sister, Fennie, always lived close to each other, and could be counted on to get into mischief. Her home was always open to her family and friends, no matter the time of day. Her children and grandchildren called her at all hours of the day or night and she would always talk with you as long as you wanted. You knew no matter what, Nellie was always your constant support and champion-never wavering. She loved cooking big homemade meals and everyone was welcome.
She met Harry Calvin Walters in Lewis County, KY and married him in Knightstown, IN. They had seven children, 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She is survived by Pam (Rod) Porter of Shelby, NC; Cindy, (Tom) Burroughs of Weatherford TX; Calvin (Sue) Walters of Mount Gilead, OH; Steven Walters of Perrysville, OH and Bonnie Smith; Jill W. Kasey (David) Maddox of Clemson, SC, and Frankie (Kristy) Walters of Mt. Gilead, OH; grandchildren, Jason, Shauna, Brandy, John Thomas, Harry, Luke, Ros, Cody, Zach, Kellan and Kyndyl; great grandchildren, Trevor, Isaac, Nickolas, Louis, Leon, Elon, Ira Lee, Conrad, Claire, and Steelie; her siblings Mildred Bloomfield, Donetta Beiland, Phyllis Bentley, Carolyn McGlone; sister-in-law Joann Walters and her beloved sister-in-law, Betty Gilliam; brother-in-law Norman Brown and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Ira and Marie, her husband, Harry Calvin, her son, Ricky, Allen, and her grandson, Cory Lee; her brothers Oscar, Bertram, Clifford, Roscoe and Ronnie Dean; her sisters, Becky, Fennie, and Louise; her in-laws Beatrice Lewis, Janet Brown, Allen Walters, Alton Walters, Merl Bloomfield, Wilma Gilliam, Tick Bryant, Carl Blankenship, Ronnie Beiland, Beulah Gilliam and Margaret Gilliam.
Visitation will be held at 11:30 AM, Saturday, September 13, 2025, a Globe Funeral Chapel, 7975 Lower Kinney Rd., Camp Dix, KY with brother Jerry Bloomfield officiating.
