Nelson Coll

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Nelson "Big Nel" Coll on September 24, 2025, at the age of 59.
Born in Trinidad, Cuba, in 1965, Nelson immigrated to West New York, NJ, in 1969. He was a man whose presence filled every room he entered. Known for his booming laughter, quick wit, and endless jokes, he had a gift for making everyone feel included. Whether he was cracking jokes or raising a glass with friends, his larger-than-life personality left a mark on everyone he met.
For more than 30 years, Nelson dedicated himself to the North Bergen Recreation Football Program, where he was known as Coach Nelson. Contributing to championships and legendary seasons, Coach Nelson was always the first on the field and the last to leave. He inspired generations of players who now carry his love for the game in their hearts.
Above all else, Nelson loved his family. He was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His grandson, Skyler, knew him as "Pop Pop," a title he wore with pride, love, and countless reminders of his devotion.
Nelson is survived by his children, Caitlin, Kyle, Kade, and his daughter-in-law Jessica along with his beloved grandson, Skyler. He is also survived by his parents, Nelson and Dalia, his sisters Soraya, Ileana, and Adrianna, his brother-in-laws Juan and Robert, as well as his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Beyond his family, Nelson leaves behind a community and township that will continue to carry on his legacy.
