Newman was born November 7, 1946 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to parents Nolan Edward and Louise Stalvey Slatton. He began a police career of 20 plus years serving first at Hammondville, AL., and then on to serve as Chief of Police for the town of Ider and the City of Henagar. He owned and operated an Auto Body Repair and Auto Glass businesses for several years. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Ider Ashlar Lodge and had been a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He had served as a member of the Henagar City Council.
Survivors include his son, Andy Slatton(Trina), grandchildren, Brandon Slatton, Alyson Strickland(Bennett), Paige Slatton, Sarah Slatton, great-grandson, Xavier Slatton, brothers, Rodney Slatton(Gina), and Dewitt Slatton. He was preceded in death by his parents, and son, Eric Slatton.
