Maiale
Nicholas. July 5, 2025. Nicholas J. Maiale, an accomplished attorney who demonstrated a lifelong commitment to improving the lives of Pennsylvanians, passed away on July 5, 2025. He was 73 years old.
Born and raised in South Philadelphia, Maiale studied at Penn State Abington before graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University Park campus in 1973. Maiale earned his law degree from Temple University in 1976, where he was a member of the law review. He then established a law firm in Philadelphia and developed a client list that included businesses such as Comcast, the Rubin Organization, Rite Aid, and Walmart.
Simultaneously, he was elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1980, and he was re-elected for consecutive terms through 1992. He served on the committees for Judiciary, Finance, Insurance, Business and Commerce, and Appropriations. Maiale prided himself on developing relationships with people across party lines.
For nearly three decades, Maiale served on the board of the Pennsylvania State Employees' Retirement System. In 1992, he was appointed board chairman of the fund, which grew from nearly $5 billion to more than $26 billion during his tenure.
Maiale was a committed Penn State supporter. At Abington, he endowed scholarships and was named Outstanding Alumnus and Distinguished Alumnus. The University named him an Alumni Fellow, and he received the Distinguished Alumni Award.
Maiale also served as finance chairman of the Delaware Valley Multiple Sclerosis Society, which inducted him into its Volunteer Hall of Fame. He was the recipient of many honors, including the Blair Thompson Lifetime Venture Award from the Greater Philadelphia Venture Group.
Despite his 45 year battle with multiple sclerosis, Nick still had a successful and fulfilling career. He was also a great humanitarian and philanthropist. Nick was the son of the late Clementine (nee Falcone) and the late Albert Maiale, brother of the late Albert J. Maiale, uncle of Theresa Flick (Adam), great uncle of Grant Albert Flick, and close friend of his dedicated caregiver, William Benckert. Nick is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to his VIEWING Monday July 14, 2025 9:30AM to 10:30AM at the Church of St. Richard, 18th & Pollock Sts. Followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:30AM. INT. will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, family requests that contributions be made to The National Multiple Sclerosis Society Greater Delaware Valley Chapter, 30 South 17th Street, Suite 800, Philadelphia PA 19103.

I met Nick about four years ago, as his Physical Therapist at the start of the pandemic. From there, I spent almost every Saturday for the next four years helping Nick maintain his strength, and we shared our August birthdays together for dinner. We talked about any, and everything during this time. We spoke about our lives, the world around us, and bickered over sports every week. Nick was my favorite person to talk sports with, even though he was a Celtics and Braves fan. I made sure to remind him every week he is from Philly, and should be a Philly sports fan.

What started off as a professional relationship, quickly transformed into much more. Nick became a dear friend, a mentor, and someone who's resilience has shifted the way I live my own life. His life was a testament to what it truly means to be strong. He faced challenges most people couldn't even understand. He met each day with courage and determination, and refused to be limited by his MS. He achieved everything he set out to do from the moment he stepped foot onto Penn State's campus. I had the privilege of attending his naming ceremony, for the "Nick Maiale Student Government Leadership room" with him. I was astounded by the admiration and respect with which he was celebrated.

Nick changed my life, and I am a better person for having known him. His strength and perseverance have inspired me, and his spirit will always push me to be the best version of myself, despite any obstacles that come my way. He will be greatly missed, but his name and legacy will never be forgotten.
