Nicholas Mischenko, 90 of Mt. Prospect. Beloved husband of Valentina nee Taran. Loving father of Elizabeth (Mark) Pawlyk, Anatole “Tony” (Natalia) Mischenko, and Katya (George) Mycyk. Cherished grandfather of Daniel (Talin) Pawlyk, Victoria Pawlyk, Christina Pawlyk, Isabella Mischenko, Nicholas Mischenko, Valentina Mycyk and Anastasia Mycyk. Dear brother of Olga (the late Ivan) Stryzakowski, George (Victoria) Mischenko, Peter (Irina) Mischenko, the late John (Maria) Mischenko, and the late Grace Krasno. Also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Nicholas proudly served in the US Army with the rank of Specialist. After the military he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. During his career he was employed by Bell and Howell, designing movie projectors, cameras, slide projectors and later was employed by Motorola as a Principal Staff Engineer designing the mechanical components of cell phones. Nicholas holds many patents for his designs at both companies.
Nicholas was very proud of his Ukrainian heritage, serving and volunteering in many Ukrainian committees and organizations. From 2002-2014, he served as President of the Ukrainian Genocide Famine Foundation - USA, he was a member of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, head of St. Volodymyr UOC Choir, head of Church Council at St. Volodymyr UOC and was a choir member in the St. Andrew UOC choir. In 2007 he was awarded a medal from Ukraine’s President Yushchenko for his contributing research on the Holodomor. In 2023 the Ukrainian Genocide Famine Foundation - USA awarded Nicholas with a Medal of Honor for his dedication and service.
He especially enjoyed family gatherings at his home, spending time with his wife of 66 years, their children, grandchildren, and extended family. He will be dearly missed.
Visitation Thursday, April 3 from 4:30 p.m. until time of Panachyda, 6:30 p.m. at Humes Funeral Home, 320 W. Lake Street, Addison (2 Mi. W. of Rt. 83, 2 Mi. E. of Rt. 53).
Meet at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 300 E. Army Trail Boulevard, Bloomingdale, IL for Funeral Service on Friday, April 4 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Andrew Ukrainian Cemetery.
