It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Nicole Renee Mathisen, who left this world far too soon on February 2, 2025.
Born in
Greenville, SC, she was a daughter of Brad and Michelle Mathisen.
Nicole was a creative soul who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a passion for art, often immersing herself in drawing, building intricate Lego structures, and exploring the worlds of video games. An avid baker, Nicole brought sweetness to our lives by sharing her delicious creations with family and friends. Her stubbornness and introverted nature only highlighted her loyalty to those she loved, and her dark sense of humor brought laughter and comfort during life's challenges.
Nicole was diagnosed with cancer on 6/23/2024, and was further diagnosed with NUT Carcinoma in July. NUT Carcinoma is named for and defined by a DNA mutation of the NUT gene. NUT carcinoma is a rare and highly aggressive cancer that is characterized by rapid tumor growth and spread with a poor prognosis and limited treatment options.
Nicole is survived by her loving parents, Brad and Michelle Mathisen, whose steadfast support and love shaped the wonderful person she was. Her legacy of kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of her brother, Jake (Becca) and her twin sister, Natalie; grandparents, Evelyn Henson of Spartanburg; Roger Mathisen and wife, Brenda; and Joanne Randall all of Minneapolis, MN; great aunt & uncle, Nena and Michael Jolley of Spartanburg; aunts and uncles, Glenn and Maria Godfrey of Denver, CO, Theresa and Jason Blaser and Jenny and John Mullaney all of Dallas, TX, and Jon and Vicky Mathisen of Minneapolis, MN; and her beloved pets, Luna, Stella, and Patches.
A time to honor Nicole's life and spirit will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown. This gathering will provide an opportunity for all who knew her to share stories, celebrate her unique spirit, and find comfort in one another's company.
