A loving tribute to our beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

Nina was born on March 13, 1937 in Flint, Michigan to James & Essie Thomas. She was joined in life by her sisters “Nan” & “Gerry” and her brother “Bob”.

Nina was a devoted wife to James “Jim” Shavrnoch, a caring  mother to Linda (Tim) Schmieder, the late Charles “Steve” (Maria E.)  MacFarlane and James “Jim” (Maria H.) MacFarlane, a loving grandmother to Stefanie (Rob) Fuller, Jeremy MacFarlane, Lucas Lewandowski, Adam MacFarlane, Jamie (John) Boyer, Jarod (Kristina) MacFarlane, Jacob (Joy) MacFarlane,  Melissa Lara, Travis MacFarlane and Macy Wiswell.  However, Nina took her greatest joy in being a great grandmother. Even though she never had the opportunity to meet all of them, she loved them all. She leaves several great grandchildren, Devin, Login, Mackenzie, Emily, Hannah, Teagan, Lucas II, Estrella, Jack, Gabriel, Tristan, Jayden, Jayce, Jackson, Sophia, Charlie, Henry, Maddox, Alexander, Kate, Skylynn, Ariana, Gabriel, Samuel, Mila and Briana.

Nina attended a baptist church as a youth and started singing in the choir. She continued singing and ended up singing with Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey, The Dorsey Brothers Band. She sang on a radio show during this time and made a television commercial for a company called “Muntz TV”.

After realizing that she wanted a more traditional life, Nina went on to give birth to her 3 beautiful children, worked at her uncle’s burger joint, Kewpie Burger which later became “Bill Thomas Halo Burger”, worked at St. Joseph Hospital in Flint as a nursing assistant and then finished her career in the automobile industry, retiring from Buick City in 1996.

Nina married the love of her life, Jim, on July 23, 1979. Together they built a beautiful home in Linden, which was her pride and joy. She loved laying in the sun, next to their pool, in her backyard oasis.  She loved her beautiful flower beds, took pride in her fountain and water feature and fired the lawn boy because she felt that she did a much better job.  They had many gatherings, parties and holidays in the family home over the years.

Nina & Jim loved traveling with their friends and going on cruises. Some of her favorite places were Tucson, Palm Springs, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, the Caribbean Islands and Michigan’s upper peninsula.

Nina had many pets throughout the years. Any time an animal needed a home, she would take it in. A few of her favorite dogs were Andre’ , Kara and Ernie. Along with several other dogs, cats and birds.

Nina always knew when someone needed a helping hand or a shoulder to cry on. She had a knack for making friends and was always the life of the party! She was always the best dressed and you never saw her with out her hair done & make up on. Nina was a perfectionist and nothing in her home or yard was ever out of place.

Nina leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband Jim, children Linda & Tim Schmieder, Jim & Maria H. MacFarlane, daughter in law Maria Elena MacFarlane, her sister Gerry Moore and all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was proceeded in death by her son Steve MacFarlane, her parents James & Essie Thomas, her sister Nancy Sue Campbell and her brother Robert Thomas as well as several other family members and friends.
