Noemi Costa Gomes,
“Mimi” or “Abuela”, as she was lovingly known by family and friends, passed on July 17, 2020, peacefully in Houston, Texas. She was born on November 30, 1939, in Havana, Cuba to Rolando Azpiri and Olga Mendez.
Mimi encompassed so many wonderful qualities and traits. The word brave continually comes to mind commencing with a move from Cuba to the USA in her early twenties. Once in New York, she met and married Fernando Sr. Life quickly changed providing Mimi with her son Fernando Jr. and daughter Teresa. Opportunities landed the family in Hartford, Connecticut and shortly thereafter settled in Houston, Texas. Not only smart, talented, beautiful inside and out, but she often was a soft shoulder to cry on and enjoyed helping others. She whole heartedly loved her family and friends, often greeting them with her beautiful smile, great sense of humor and infectious laugh. Sincere and generous by nature, she did not know a stranger and always made everyone feel welcomed. If you were lucky enough to share in one of her homemade meals, you would know what an incredible cook she was. We often joked that she should market “Mimi’s” meals to go, as we knew it would become a household essential. The loss of Mimi is devastating and even though she is physically not among us, she will be forever in our hearts.
She is preceded in death by her father, Rolando Azpiri; mother, Olga Mendez; and husband, Fernando C. Gomes Sr.
Mimi is survived by her son, Fernando G. Costa Jr., wife Christina and grandson Nicholas; daughter, Teresa C. Gomes; sister-in-law, Grace Luzio, husband Victor; niece, Sylvia Fioretti; nephew, Richard Luzio; cousin, Olga Sanjuan, husband Solo; cousin, Estelita Gonzalez, husband Hivo.
In addition to family, she leaves behind many close friends; Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Murphree, Mr. and Mrs. Lan Bentsen, Sao Dias, Doris Sneed, and Blanca.
Due to Covid-19, the family is unable to schedule memorial services. Details will be provided at a later date.
