Nolan joseph Sohler passed away on January 11, 2024 at the age of 97. Nolan was born on March 15, 1926 in Vancouver, WA. To George and Petronella (Nellie) Sohler.
Nolan grew up and went to school in Verboort, where he lived with his grandparents, William and Anna Hermens after the death of his mother, Nellie, when Nolan was three years old.
George married opal Tucker in 1937 and wanted Nolan to come and live with them in Hood River, but he didn't want to leave his grandparents, so he was left in their care in Verboort. George and Opal had five children together, Larry, Ed, Dick, Marylou and Kathy.
Nolan served in the Army during WWII. He was first stationed in The Philippines, and was with a group on Okinawa, staging for fighting in Japan, when the atomic bombs were dropped. He always said those bombs saved his life. After the war ended, Nolan spent some time stationed in Japan before coming back home.
Nolan met his future bride, Catherine Herb, when friends persuaded him to ask her to a wedding dance. This first date, on February 14, was the first time they met. Valentine's Day was always celebrated as a special day for Nolan and Catherine for the rest is their lives.
Nolan's career was a truck driver. He drove log truck and milk truck in the early days, ending with dump trucks which he drove until retirement while working for Baker Rock. Nolan's driving skills, professionalism and work ethic were legendary, and made him a favorite with his co-workers and customers alike.
His driving wasn't just for work, though. Nolan and Catherine took many road trips together, as far north as Jasper, Albert, and as far south as Yuma, AZ and many points in between.
Nolan had many interests over the years, including camping, fishing, and jigsaw puzzles, but he may be most remembered for his wonderful wood carvings and amazing trucks and equipment he fashioned out of wood.
Nolan was a man of great faith, strong principle and great love for his family. He was our rock and will be greatly missed.
Nolan was preceded in death by his son Ronald, his brother Larry, his granddaughter Emily and his grandson George.
He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Catherine Herb Sohler, Daughter Linda (Russ Morgan), Son Mark (Susan), Son Steve, (Kathy), Son Roger, (Debbie) daughter Lisa (Mel Philbrook), Son Tom, (Carol) daughter Barbara (Curt Ludwick), son Mike (Jena York), brothers, Ed (Robin), Dick (Sandi), Sisters, Marylou Holoboff, Kathy (Mel Franks).
He also leaves behind 29 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren.
