Norbert “Butch” Rider, 82, of Equality, Illinois, passed away surrounded by his family at Brookstone Assisted Living in Harrisburg, on October 2, 2025. Butch was born on April 14, 1943, to George “Gib” & Eva (McCormick) Rider.
Butch farmed in Gallatin County until his retirement in 2010. He served on the Gallatin County Soil and Water Conservation District for 27 years. Butch was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus in Ridgway, serving in many different roles.
One of the greatest joys of Butch’s life was the role of Santa. Every December for around 50 years, Butch would take up the mantle of the magical Santa Claus, dashing and darting from one place to another delighting people of all ages. He always did this out of love for his friends, family, and the community and would always donate his time. You never knew where you would see him; nursing homes, day cares, family gatherings, and even at the VA hospital in Marion. He spread Christmas Cheer all over the place. He has still kept up the tradition even when he himself entered the nursing home and then later assisted living, dressing up for every Christmas he could.
Butch could often be found at the coffee shop, catching up on the latest town happenings, driving around with his good friend, Jerry Trousdale, or at one of the local bars listening to the bands play. He was always helping those around him and took care of many people, he was the type of person who would always offer a ride, to pay a bill, or even a place to stay if someone was in need. Butch also enjoyed taking roles in community plays in Eldorado. He made many lifelong friends and will be truly missed by all.
Special thanks to Brookstone Estates staff and residents for the care and love they have shown Butch and his family during this time. You all made a huge difference in Butch’s life.
Butch is survived by his children: Shawn (Michelle) Rider of Eldorado; Michael Rider of Eldorado; Kimberly Rider of Myrtle Beach, SC; and Nicholas Rider of Equality. Grandchildren: Gabrielle Rider, Joseph (Andrea) Rider, Lucas (Dawn) Rider, McKenzie Rider, Chaise (Carissa) Prince, Brianna Childers, Bailey Rider, and Raine Rider. Great Grandsons: Jayce, Brent, Ryder, Remy, Bricen, Clayton, Grayson, & Drew. Also surviving special friends, Judy Scates of New York, NY; Leslie Carpenter of Shawneetown, IL; and caregiver Kay Payne of Cave-in-Rock.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents, Gib and Eva, 2 infant sisters and many aunts and uncles.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to Brookstone Estates’ Activity Fund.
