Norma Jean Carpenter

Mrs. Norma Jean Self Carpenter went home to be with her Lord and Savior on September 12, 2025, surrounded by her children in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, at the age of 89.

Born in Floydada, Texas to Oran and Myrtle Self on April 16, 1936. She was married to Donald Wayne Carpenter on May 30, 1954. Norma was raised in the Baptist faith and remained devoted throughout her life. She shared her faith by teaching Sunday school to children ages three through ten, offering guidance and care to young learners.

She enjoyed a fulfilling career and retired from Deutz Corporation in Norcross, Georgia, in 2004. Her dedication and professionalism left a lasting impression on her colleagues. She retired August of 2004 and moved to North Georgia to be close to her grandchildren.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Wayne Carpenter and infant daughter Lori Ann Carpenter, her parents Oran and Myrtle Self and brother Henry Self.

She is survived by her daughter Lisa Otting of Ringgold, GA and son Eric Carpenter of Atlanta, GA, three grandsons and their spouses: Michael Otting of Fort Oglethorpe, GA; Rhys Otting of Ooltewah, TN; and Matthew Otting of Chattanooga, TN. She also leaves behind five great-grandchildren, Ellis, Lexi, Ansleigh, Abby and Hudson who brought joy to her later years. Her sisters Anne Hackett of Plainview, Texas, and Elayne Ferguson of Lubbock, Texas continue to honor her memory.

A woman of many talents, Mrs. Carpenter found joy in knitting and crocheting for those close to her. Her home was often filled with the comforting aromas of freshly baked bread and pies-traditions she shared with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Fort Oglethorpe First Baptist Church, 2645 Old Lafayette Road. Details will be announced soon.
