Norma Curtis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home - McAlester on Dec. 26, 2025.
Norma Jean Curtis, 71, formerly of McAlester, Oklahoma, passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2025 at her home in Tulsa.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2025 at the Chaney Harkins Funeral Home Chapel.
Norma Jean Curtis was born on July 12, 1954, in McAlester, Oklahoma, to Alfonso Curtis, Sr. and Maggie Marie (Kirk) Curtis. She was the fourth of seven children and was raised in a loving, close-knit family.
At an early age, Norma Jean attended St. Mary's Catholic School through the third grade before transferring to L'Ouverture School. She later completed her education at McAlester High School, where she proudly graduated. During her school years, Norma Jean loved being active and was especially passionate about sports. She played softball for the L'Ouverture Giants and later for the Granger Jets, truly enjoying the camaraderie and pride of being part of a team.
Norma Jean had a deep appreciation for style and took great pride in dressing beautifully. She also had an incredible passion for cooking, and her barbecue was famously "out of this world." Preparing meals for others brought her genuine joy and fulfillment from deep within her heart. She was known for her quick left hand, her confident and unforgettable walk, and the radiant smile that could light up any room she entered. Her grandfather, W.B. Curtis, affectionately nicknamed her "Peacock," a name that perfectly reflected her grace, confidence, and presence. Norma Jean was well known and deeply loved throughout her community.
She leaves to cherish her memory her three children: Tony Curtis of Kansas City, Missouri; Myron Curtis of Layton, Utah; and Chandra Curtis of Natchitoches, Louisiana. She is also survived by her siblings: Marian Black of McAlester, Oklahoma; Patricia Ann Lee of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Leona Ellis of McAlester, Oklahoma; and Brenda Hendricks of Tulsa, Oklahoma; her sister-in-law, Lorelie Pinkney of McAlester, Oklahoma; her aunts: Emma Watts of Eufaula, Oklahoma; Joann Hughes of St. Louis, Missouri; Elsie Meadows of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Wanda Sykes of San Antonio, Texas; along with 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Norma Jean was preceded in death by her grandparents, W.B. and Ora Curtis, and Odell and Norma Kirk; her parents, Alfonso Curtis, Sr. and Maggie Marie (Kirk) Curtis; her brother, Alfonso Curtis, Jr.; and her sister, Kathy A. Curtis.
Norma Jean was a blessing and a powerful presence in the lives of all who knew her. She loved the Lord and faithfully taught her children to love the Lord as they were growing up.
We are going to miss you, Mama!
