A celebration of life graveside service for Norma Mansfield Edge Halfpenny, 96, of Tyler will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery in Tyler. The Rev. David Luckenbach of Christ Episcopal Church will officiate under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home.
Mrs. Halfpenny passed away Saturday, January 27, 2024, in her home in Tyler. She was born March 23, 1927, in Dallas to Norman William Mansfield and Ruth Virginia Pigue Mansfield.
She was a graduate of Sunset High School in Dallas where the beautiful majorette met the handsome football player, Robert "Bob" Lee Edge. Following graduation, she attended Baylor University while Bob left to play football on a scholarship at the University of Texas at Austin. On December 21, 1946, they married, so Norma joined Bob and transferred to UT. Upon Bob's graduation, Norma's adventures as the wife of a geologist began. His work took them to
Durango, CO, Dallas, Lafayette, LA, Houston, Longview, and then finally settling in Tyler in 1963 with Bob and their two girls, Carol and Barbara.
Once in Tyler, Norma became a member of Christ Episcopal Church where she served on the Altar Guild, as well as teaching vacation bible school. She and Bob left imprints on the minds of God's children while serving as Sunday school teachers. For many years, Norma served as a volunteer at the Children's Advocacy Center and as an active member of Petroleum Wives.
Norma enjoyed cooking and was quick to share her ranger cookies, eggrolls, and sourdough bread. Too, she loved sewing for her girls for their special occasions. Reading was her passion and a handwritten note always followed a visit, a gift, or even a kind gesture from someone. She loved all creatures great and small whether two-legged or four-legged. Exercising, walking, playing golf, and Mah Jongg were always fun times with her friends while living at Emerald Bay or while vacationing at their winter home in Scottsdale, AZ.
Following the death of Bob in 1989, she married Jack Halfpenny in 1997 and they enjoyed ten years together until his death in 2007.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Norman Mansfield, her husband, Robert (Bob) L. Edge (1946 – 1989), her husband, John (Jack) H. Halfpenny (1997 – 2007), her brother, Paul J. Mansfield, her infant brother, her son-in-law John B. Gabriel, her daughter, Lisa Halfpenny and Lisa's daughter, Hannah James.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Edge Langston and husband Jack of Tyler; daughter, Barbara Edge Gabriel of Tyler; daughter, Sara Halfpenny Hill and husband Tobin of Pleasanton; her sister, Martha Mansfield West and husband Jesse of Kemp; and her sister-in-law, Sue Mansfield of San Angelo. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Robert Bruce Gabriel and wife Lindsey of Houston, Greer Edge Gabriel Del Rio and husband Serg of New Braunfels, Lonna Langston Whalen and husband Tim of Folsom, CA, Jennifer Langston Nottingham of Reno, NV, Preston Hill and wife Stephanie of San Antonio, Wade Hill and wife Alison of Georgetown, Adam Hill and wife Grace of San Antonio; as well as fifteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by three special cousins, Val Mansfield, Jr. of Richardson, Ann Mansfield Rector of
Bradenton, FL, Karen Mansfield Shaw and husband Steve of Nelson, BC; numerous nieces and nephews and Margaret Campbell, not just a friend of the family but a member of our family.
Special thanks to Drs. Savitha Shastry, Raul Torres and Nghia Truong for their care of Norma through the years.
