Norma passed away Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk. While fighting a courageous battle with cancer, she continued to be a source of strength for her family that was filled with love, compassion, and grace until she finally went Home to be with those who have gone before her.
Norma J. Simon was born September 30, 1939, in Neligh, Nebraska to Hans and Alma (Claussen) Michaelsen, child number six in a family of seven children. She attended elementary school at school district number 32 in Antelope County, Nebraska and graduated from Oakdale High School in 1956. Norma attended Wayne State College for a short time upon graduation before starting work at The Norfolk Mill in Norfolk, Nebraska. One day a farmer from Stanton showed up in a blue pickup to buy some feed and it was game over for both. Much time was spent with friends, family, and dancing the night away at King's Ballroom.
On August 4, 1963, Norma married that farmer, Robert D. Simon, at the First Methodist Church in Norfolk, NE. They lived in a few rental houses around the Stanton area until finally settling on the family farm north of Stanton. Norma cherished being a farm wife and mother, staying at home while her three children were young. It was a happy home, filled with love and laughter. Norma raised chickens on the farm, selling both the eggs and chickens many nights were spent as a family dressing chickens to sell.
She was an amazing gardener who always had a large vegetable and flower garden. Flowers for at least one wedding were supplied from that garden. As her kids got older, Norma started working at the Coast-to-Coast hardware store in Stanton and, eventually, the Stanton County Public Power District from which she retired in February 2003 after 26 years of service.
In 1977, the family moved to a new home on the family farm east of Stanton, where Norma lived until moving to Heritage at Fountain Point in September 2001. Norma's husband Bob left this earth way too early in 1988. At that time, Norma rededicated herself to her kids and, ultimately, grandkids. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she took several trips with her children and grandchildren over the years.
Norma loved being outdoors and spending time in her gardens. She enjoyed cross stitching, playing cards, bowling, dancing and assembling jigsaw puzzles. Norma was an avid reader. She loved to bake for the holidays and made dozens of cookies and bars for the holiday season. Her greatest pride was her role as mother and grandmother and time spent with family.
Norma enjoyed her volunteer work with the New England Congregational Church, Stanton VFW, and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; infant son, John Charles Simon; siblings, Peter (Ruth) Michaelsen, Arnold (Esther) Michaelsen, Margaret (Dean) Andersen, Helen (Don) Weinrich, and Mary (Dale) Pettijohn; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alex and Mamie Simon; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dale and Ellen Simon; sister-in-law, Lois Simon; brother-in-law, Richard Zechmann; and nephews, Tommy Michaelsen, Dennis Andersen, David Andersen, Ted Weinrich, and David Simon.
She is survived by her children, Julie (Alan) Simon-Bailey of Englewood, CO, Jerry (Julie) Simon of Golden, CO, and Douglas (Donna) Simon of Omaha, NE; four grandchildren, A. Grace Bailey, Eliese Simon, Robbie Bailey, and Trinity Simon; sister, Betty Zechmann of Norfolk; and many nieces, nephews and cherished friends.
