Norma Amelia Smith Birdwell, 87, of Tallahassee Florida died October 12, 2025 at her home.
Norma was born September 13, 1938 in Lamont, Florida to James Smith and Alma Shinholser.
She attended Jefferson County High School in Monticello, Florida. After graduating high school in 1956, she attended x-ray technician school in Jacksonville. She moved to Shreveport, Louisiana in 1961 where she married Jearl Birdwell in May of that year. They have been married 64 years and have traveled extensively throughout their lives. They moved back to Florida in 1970 where she continued as an x-ray tech until retirement.
Norma is survived by her husband Jearl Birdwell; son, Paul Birdwell (Elizabeth); daughter, Anita Sandel (Garland); sisters, Jan Kilpatrick and Sandra Hamrick; sisters-in-law, Vivian Smith and Alice Smith; and grandchildren, Austin Sandel (Brandi), Trevor Sandel (Allison), Zachary Birdwell and Chase Birdwell.
She was predeceased by her parents, Jim and Alma Smith, sisters, Melba Carter, Gwynn Smith, Faye Sanders, and brothers, Jimmy Smith and Sidney Smith.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 16, 2025 at Beggs Funeral Homes, 3322 Apalachee Parkway, Tallahassee, FL 32311, (850) 942-2929, with burial at 1:00 p.m. at Tallahassee National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Beggs Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Big Bend Hospice Foundation, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd, Tallahassee, FL 32308.
