On June 18, 1939, amidst joyous celebrations, Norma Jean Fountain entered the world as the third of ten children born to the Late Administrative Assistant Henry and First Lady Gracie Mae Fountain, hailing from the sunshine state of
Jacksonville, Florida. Later, her family relocated to Fitzgerald, Georgia, where Norma Jean flourished at Queenland High School, showcasing her talents on the basketball court, in the chorus, and in the drama department.
Norma Jean was married at a tender age and to that union was born a beautiful baby girl, Verlinda. Soon after, she embarked on a journey that led her to
Peachtree City, Georgia. There, she graduated from the Fayette County Training High School where she was a true star on the girl's basketball team, a member of the drama club, and chorus.
Following her graduation, Norma Jean ventured to Atlanta, Georgia, where she began a successful career, notably spending 33 years at the National Biscuit Company, known as "Nabisco," before retiring in 1997. Nabisco was not just a place of employment, but a place where she made lifelong connections with friends whose bonds still remain.
In 1961, she was joined in matrimonial union with the late Deacon Theodore Thompson and welcomed to the world her second child, Tony, a beautiful baby boy. This union also blessed her with three bonus children, Beryl, Theodore, Jr., and Deidra.
In the mid 1960's, Norma and her family joined Hinsley Temple Church of God in Christ, under the leadership of the Late Superintendent Luther R. Hinsley, Sr. Norma Jean worked faithfully at Hinsley Temple for more than 25 years. She served in various capacities, such as: president of Hospitality, deacon's wife, Sunday School teacher, coordinator of various church trips, and choir member. Norma Jean also assisted her husband, Theodore in his role as president of the choir and Deacon Board chair.
In 1984, Norma Jean and her family became pioneer members of the Paradise Church of God in Christ, under the leadership of Bishop Paul L. Fortson and Evangelist Carolyn Fortson (her brother-in-law and sister). At Paradise, Norma Jean continued her faithful dedication to ministry and served as president of Hospitality, Pastor's Appreciation coordinator, Sunday School teacher, choir member, evangelist, member of the Mother's Board, Mission in Action team, and several other auxiliaries. She traveled with Bishop Fortson and the mission team for over 13 years, to Barbados, St. Thomas, and St. Croix in support of the Barbados & Caribbean Jurisdiction.
Norma Jean's love for her family was steadfast. For many years, she played a pivotal role in organizing the Annual Fountain Family Reunion, where she served as president of the Atlanta District for more than 30 years. She was undoubtedly a cornerstone of the family, orchestrating holiday gatherings, arranging trips, supporting her parents and siblings, and infusing joy with her laughter and occasional practical jokes.
Throughout her life, she exemplified unwavering dedication to her faith, leaving an indelible mark of service and devotion. Her interests were diverse, ranging from singing and gardening to decorating and entertaining guests.
Norma Jean's life was filled with blessings in abundance, as the Lord afforded her luxury vehicles, the finest clothes, from linen and silk, to fox and mink. She had her share of diamonds, gold, silver, and pearls. She traveled the world near and far. More than all, she experienced boundless love.
After years of selflessly serving others, at home on a serene Friday morning, May 17, 2024, the Lord called upon his devoted daughter to transcend labor and embrace her heavenly reward.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Theodore Thompson; parents, Pastor Henry and First Lady Gracie Mae Fountain; siblings, John Henry Fountain (Cornelia), Clara Bell Fountain, Johnny C. Fountain, Sr. (Lannie), Annie Sarah Fountain, Doris Fountain Murry (Winston), and David Fountain.
