Norma Wastrack, 94, long-time resident of Fond du Lac and North Fond du Lac, passed away on November 3 at the Rolling Meadows Senior Living facility in Fond du Lac after more than a year of gradually declining health.
Born Norma Mae Hintz to Edward and Jessie Hintz on September 18,1931 on a farm near Oshkosh, Norma graduated high school in Oshkosh in 1949. She was married to Army veteran George Wastrack, originally from Green Lake, on May 12, 1951. The couple would go on to have four children – Kenneth, Harry, Linda, and Richard. Norma would spend the next 25 years as a stay-at-home mom, until the youngest of her children was grown. Then, in the mid-1970s, she was hired as a seamstress for Fond du Lac Tent & Awning, a job she would hold for 26 years. After retirement, Norma enjoyed travelling to visit her children and other relatives, frequently with her sister Josephine as travel companion.
In 1997, Norma learned to play Hand & Foot, a card game very similar to Canasta, which she had played since the 1940s. Norma almost immediately became the player to beat, both in casual games and in tournaments. Hand & Foot became a passion for her for the rest of her life and she played a competitive game against whoever would sit across the table from her to the end.
Norma is survived by one son, Harry, and his wife Jean (Baranski), who reside in Northern Virginia. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Barbara (Purvis) of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and a son-in-law, Jeffery Colp, of Proctor, Arkansas. Special mention must be made of Norma’s niece, Mary Jakubowski, of Fond du Lac, who provided much care and assistance to Norma in her later years.
Norma is also survived by three grandchildren and four great grandchildren, as well as two cousins and a number of other nieces and nephews and innumerable friends.
Norma was preceded in death by her husband George, her daughter Linda, her son Richard, her son Kenneth, and her grandson Dillon, as well as her parents and four siblings – Orion, Emily, Josephine, and Alvin.
