Norman's Life Story
Norman John Suel Matthews, Sr. was born on June 9, 1941 in Pocomoke City, Maryland to the late Ulysses Matthews and Helen Matthews. Norman peacefully departed this life on Saturday, May 10, 2025.
Norman was educated in the public schools of Somerset County. He held many jobs throughout his years, but the one he enjoyed the most was being a devoted farmer for Overholt Farms. He was employed for many years by Howard Overholt, a devoted friend and his family before his retirement.
In the early 1960's, Norman moved to Paterson, New Jersey where he met and married Quincy B. Maloney of Great Falls, SC. who passed away in 2001.
Norman was a faithful member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church for many years. He served on the Usher Board and was a member of the United Methodist Men.
Norman was a hardworking man who lived a simple life. He loved beautifying his yard with flowers, planting in his garden and growing his own vegetables that many families and friends enjoyed eating. Also, he enjoyed his family BBQ get-togethers in which he enjoyed talking to his family, especially his brothers.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Norman was preceded in death by his six brothers, Hampton Matthews, Eugene Matthews, Sr., Clarence Matthews, Roland Ballard, William (Billy) King and Isadore King and his five sisters, Anna Fletcher, Doris Dacres, Lottie Middleton, Lillian Schoolfield and Addie Ballard.
Norman leaves to cherish his memory: two sons, Norman Matthews, Jr. (Lisa) of Princess Anne, Maryland and Lionel Matthews of Westover, Maryland; his daughter, Renee' Waters of Salisbury Maryland; three grandchildren, Devrey (Paris) Matthews, Norrie Matthews and Tatyana Waters; three great-grandchildren, Dallas and Brooklyn Matthews and Ailani Tunnell; one brother, James Matthews, Sr. (Sylvia) of Pocomoke, Maryland; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Matthews and Linda Matthews, both of Pocomoke, MD and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and devoted friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.
