Springfield - Norman Allen Perlmutter, 93, of Springfield, Illinois, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, at HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield surrounded by his loving family. Norman was born Nov. 2, 1932, in Springfield, the son of Harry and Mollie Gralnick Perlmutter. He married Jacqueline J. Levine on May 20, 1956, in Springfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Herbert, Stanley and Nathaniel Perlmutter; one sister, Bette Kaiserman; and a granddaughter, Abby Lauren Robins.
Norman was a member of Temple Israel in Springfield. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1951 and was a member of the National Honor Society. He attended Springfield Junior College and graduated from Lincoln Land Community College and Sangamon State University, with a bachelor's degree in business and a minor in accounting. He also attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
After college, Norman worked at his family's business, The Fair Men's Clothing Store. He was then a buyer at Myers Clothing Store and Bressmer's. Norman was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a corporal in the military police during the Korean War. Norman then began his career with the state of Illinois, working in accounting with the Division of Child Support for many years. In addition to his strong devotion to his faith and family, Norman loved sports, including University of Illinois basketball and football. He was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and he never missed watching a game on television.
Norman is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jackie Perlmutter, of Springfield; one son, David (wife, Patty) Perlmutter of New Port Richey, Florida; one daughter, Shari L. Robins, of Buffalo, New York; four grandchildren, Jessica Robins and Jared, Bryan and Megan Perlmutter; two great-grandchildren, Saige and Silas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Norman's family will meet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, at Temple Israel at 1140 W. Governor St. in Springfield, with Rabbi Barry Marks officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
