Norman Schafer, age 72, of Strandburg, SD, passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2023. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at the Goodwin Area Hall, Goodwin, SD with Pastor Jim Uthe officiating. Burial will be in the Goodwin Cemetery, Goodwin. Visitation will be Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the Goodwin Area Hall. Houseman Funeral Home in Clear Lake, SD is entrusted with the arrangements.
Norman Lloyd Schafer was born at Memorial Hospital in Watertown, S.D. on March 20th, 1951 to Luvern and Lois Schafer. He grew up on the family farm near Strandburg, SD. Norman attended grade school in Strandburg and high school in Clear Lake.
Norman's passion was racing and repairing cars with his twin brother Neil Schafer. His favorite race vehicle was a 66' half ton Ford pickup utilized on back roads for racing against the local guys. Then there was always farm chores to do that got in the way of all the fun. He made a living driving truck until him and Neil took over the family farm. After trying to retire he returned working for Wescon the last 10 years where he drove truck and did mechanical repairs. He collected guns, loved a good game of pinochle, checking the cattle, and watching Nascar on Sundays and calling his girls to tell them who won the race were his favorite pass times.
He married Cindy Strasser and, in that union, he was blessed with Nikki and Carrie. He felt he got the best deal in the world watching his two girls grow up and enjoying every moment with them. He loved teaching them to drive out in the pasture, how to repair their cars, and how to play softball. Norman passed away Saturday, July 8, 2023 at the age of 72.
He is lovingly remembered by his daughter's Nicki and Carrie; grandchildren Desirae and Kasches; great granddaughter Jemma, and great grandson Jasper; brothers: Duane, Neil, Vernon; sisters: Gale (Richard) Cizadlo, and Linda (Bill) Lundquist; sister-in-law Shirley Schafer and many nieces and nephews, and his dog Tripp.
He was preceded in death by his parents Luvern and Lois (Roe) Schafer, sister Lila, and brother Kenneth; grandparents Ben and Mildred Roe and Adam and Elizabeth Schafer.
A special THANK YOU to those that cared for Norman Schafer in his final days: Shirley Schafer, Inter- Lakes Home Health, and Avera medical team.
