Norman Slaught Obituary

May 12, 1930 - April 13, 2023 Norman (Norm), a native Angeleno, returned to his loving God on April 13, 2023 surrounded by his wife of 68 years, Claire O'Connor Slaught, and his children. Norm was born to Francis Ellsworth Slaught and Ann Martin Slaught at Saint Vincent Hospital, Los Angeles. At a very young age, Norm moved with his parents and two brothers, Martin and John, to La Ca¤ada, CA. Norm attended La Ca¤ada Elementary School from kindergarten through 8th grade. While Norm attended John Muir High School in Pasadena, he lettered in 4 different sports, and became Senior Class President. Upon graduating from John Muir High School, he was awarded a baseball scholarship to attend Santa Clara University. He proceeded to play tennis for SCU. In his senior year at Santa Clara, he was chosen Captain of the tennis team and became the #1 player in the league. While attending Santa Clara, he also participated in the ROTC program, and was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the US Army. In 1954, Norm met Mary Claire O'Connor of Los Angeles. They were married on July 4, 1955 at Cathedral Chapel Church and immediately moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where Norm was stationed at Schofield Army Base. Upon completing his tour of duty with the army, Norm and Claire, along with their new baby, Martin, returned to California and made their home in La Ca¤ada, California. In a few short years, when their family increased quickly, they moved to a larger home in Pasadena, and eventually settled in San Marino, California where they continued to raise their eight children. In his professional life, Norm enjoyed over 52 years in financial services. He received many designations and recognitions, including serving as President of the Life Underwriters Association, President of the Estate Planning Council of the San Gabriel Valley, and Life Member of the Million Dollar Round Table. Norm was also past president of the Pasadena Serra Club, and enjoyed his membership in Los Angeles Rotary #5, eventually relocating to the San Marino Rotary Club. He was a long time member of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. A very large part of Norm's life was sports, and especially tennis. Norm played national level tournaments at every age group into his 80's and competed at the highest national level in Father & Son doubles. He encouraged his 8 children to get involved in athletics. It paid off, because several of his children also received college athletic scholarships. However, his greatest love was faith, family, and friends. As a devoted Catholic his entire life, he protected all of his loves with a passion. In addition to his wife Claire, Norm is survived by his eight children; Martin (Sharmel), Kenneth (Elizabeth), Theodore (Yvonne), James (Julie), Marianne (Patrick), Daniel (Michelle), John (Robin), and Norman Jr. (Kathleen). He is also survived by his 27 grandchildren, his 5 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Norm is also survived by his younger brother, John Rhodes Slaught (Molly) of Palos Verdes, CA and his brother-in-law Joseph A. O'Connor (Jane) of Dana Point, CA. Norm is predeceased by his older brother, The Reverend Monsignor Martin E. Slaught, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, his sister-in-law Adrianne Slaught, and Melitta Slaught, his daughter-in-law. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any donations to be made to either the Catholic Education Foundation at 3424 Wilshire Blvd, 3rd floor, Los Angeles, CA 90010, or Huntington Memorial Hospital, Philanthropy Department, at 100 West California Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91105. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 28th, 2023 at 4:00 PM, at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church, 215 Foothill Blvd. La Ca¤ada Flintridge, CA. To our devoted and loving father, who is now in Heaven with God, his mother, father, brother, daughter-in-law and many close friends, I want to again say I love you and thank you for being an inspiring, patient and generous father to our gang of 8, along with your many grandchildren and great grandchildren and for your 68 years of devoted love to Mom.

I have always been proud of you and the life you lived. It was certainly hard work for you and Mom raising a large family, including keeping 7 boys and Marianne alive during our adventurous years.

I will always think about the last day we spent together at your bedside in the hospital the day before you joined God. Just before I left your hospital room that day, I said, "Dad, I love you." Even though it was difficult for you to speak, you clearly said, "I love you too." Thank you Dad.

Thank you God for giving us an amazing father and mother.
