Funeral Mass for Norman S. Tchida, 90, of Sisseton, South Dakota will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Sisseton, SD with Fr. Gregg Frankman Celebrant. Sequencer will be Kay Nikolas and soloist Sandi Jaspers. Pall Bearers will be Ryan Batt, Tyler Batt, Alex Batt, Justin Fryer, Jordan Gunderson, Garrett Gunderson and Matt Anderson. Honorary Pall Bearers will be the Sisseton Fire Department, Gordie Groos, Stan Hippen, Leo John Hull, and All Norman's Family & Friends. There will be visitation one hour prior to services at the Church. There will be visitation on Thursday, September 14, 2023 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 P.M. at Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD. Interment will be in the St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Sisseton, SD with Military Rites by Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and VFW Post #3342. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.
Norman S. Tchida was born on April 19, 1933, to Steve and Viola (Bahr) Tchida on a farm near Lake City, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake City, SD. He grew up on the family farm near Lake City and attended school in Lake City and Sisseton. On September 30, 1953, he was united in marriage to Lois George. He then went to serve in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean conflict. He was part of the 516 Signal Co. stationed at Camp Roeder, Salisbury, Austria. While enlisted in the service, Norman received the National Defense Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), Good Conduct medal, and a Sharpshooter Medal. He also served in the National Guard for 6 years. After returning from the service, he and Lois made their home in Sisseton. They were blessed with 3 daughters Teresa, Janet, and Tammy and 1 son Johnny Paul who passed away as an infant. Through the years, Norm was employed as an auto mechanic at various businesses in the Sisseton community. He then went to work for the City of Sisseton and retired as a Street Superintendent in 1995. After retirement, Norm and Lois enjoyed traveling to various places with family and friends. They also enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren. Norm served as a member of the Sisseton City Council for a number of years. He was also a member of the Sisseton Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years. He was a lifelong member of St. Peters Catholic Church. Norm was a handyman who was famous for fixing lawn mowers, golf carts, or anything else that was sent his way. He used to say, "I can fix anything but a broken heart" or "If I can't fix it, it's not broken." His garage door was always open to anyone who wanted to stop by. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with many family and friends, but especially his grandsons and great grandsons. He was also a lover of cards and Pepsi. He touched many lives and will be dearly missed.
Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife Lois of Sisseton, SD; children Janet (Harold) Fryer of Peever, SD, Tammy (Jeff) Gunderson of Seattle, Washington and son-in-law John Batt of Spearfish, SD; brother Merv (Cleo) Tchida of Aberdeen, SD; sister Melvina "Babe" McLaird of Avon, MN., sister-in-laws Mary Tchida, Duluth, MN; Lorraine (Wayne) Kelly, Sisseton, SD; Marian Valentine, St. Paul, MN, and Darlene George of Valley City, ND.; grandchildren Justin (Sheila) Fryer, Kayla (Matt) Anderson, Ryan Batt, Tyler (Chrissy) Batt, Alex Batt, Jordan Gunderson, Garrett Gunderson, and Kameron Gunderson; and11 great grandchildren.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents Steve and Viola Tchida, a son John Paul Tchida and a daughter Teresa Batt; grandson Eric Gunderson, great-grandson Isaac Anderson and a brother Clifford Tchida, and many other beloved family members.
