Norman Raymond Veazey, Jr., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 19th, surrounded by love. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Norman and Stella Veazey, and from the very beginning he lived a life defined by generosity and heart.
Norman proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War repairing tanks. After the Army, he went to technical college to learn electronic repair and put those skills to work running his own office supply and repair company with his partner in all things and love of his life, Karen.
Norman's real legacy was the way he gave of himself, again and again, without hesitation. He often filled his work van with food for local food banks. He opened his home to anyone who needed a meal or a place to stay. He brought home sailors from the Great Lakes Naval Base so they wouldn't spend the holidays alone. For family and friends, he made beautiful and imaginative cakes for every occasion. His life was a steady stream of small, quiet acts of kindness - never for attention, and always from the heart.
Later in life, his routines became legendary: his daily cookie runs to the bank, popping in to hang with his nephew Rick at work (sometimes multiple times a day), visiting the dentist office to joke with Mike, and spreading his own unique brand of banter. Everywhere he went, people remembered him - not just because he showed up, but because he always made an impression before he left.
His final years were spent in North Carolina, surrounded by family who loved taking him on adventures - finding the best pizza around, going to volleyball games, and navigating long treks in his wheelchair through traffic just to get out and about. He spent his time soaking up the love from his extraordinary team of caregivers who understood him from day one. They helped him make the very best of each day through laughter, patience, and companionship. We are truly and endlessly grateful to each and every one of them.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Alice; and his wife, Karen. He is survived by his children, Rick and Holly Crull, and Mark Veazey (Stephanie Nibert); his grandchildren, Ricky and Grace Crull, Haley and Macy Nibert, and Carly Veazey; and his nephews, Michael and Rick Dorociak.
A celebration of Norman's one-of-a-kind life will be held at a later date.
