OBIE BEDFORD, JR. Obituary
Obie Gene Bedford, Jr., was born June 27, 1968, in San Antonio, Texas to Obie Gene Bedford, Sr., and Phyllis A. Bedford. He gave his life to Christ early and was baptized at the age of 9, while living in Hawaii. He had a beautiful singing voice and was known for his infatuation and imitation of Prince. He could pull it off because of his beautiful locs of curls and slim physique.
After graduating from Robert G. Cole High School in 1986, Junior moved west – to the westside of San Antonio – where he met and married Wanda Chase. During their union, they raised three sons: Chris, Issac, and Jacob and operated a home daycare, caring for countless kids.
Junior, as we called him, had many nicknames. However, his Great Aunt Matt called him "Mr. Fine" and it stuck for life. You couldn't tell him that he wasn't fine or handsome. He was also quite the comedian and kept everyone in stitches. It was nothing for him to come into Grandma's house on a Sunday afternoon showboating his fineness and making jokes some not so appropriate.
Coming from a family known for burning in the kitchen, Junior loved cooking and his chitterlings were legendary always drawing a crowd. He would host NBA All-Star at his house each year providing a spread like no other. Decorating was also a passion of his. He loved a clean house and coordinating its beauty, just like his mother. If you visited him, you would be welcomed with some of his childhood favorites: dill pickles, chamoy, a plethora of candy and of course, the tunes of his favorite Auntie Nita Anita Baker that is.
For someone who was afraid of heights, he would jump on a roller coaster or bungie jump at the drop of hat. Yes, he was devilish. However, his love and commitment to care for people was unmatched. He would later manifest his calling becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant as a wound specialist, at Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans' Hospital for 15 years.
Never one to not speak his mind, Junior always did things his way. If you thought you would talk him out of something, good luck! Family over Everything is this family's mantra and Junior loved his family and hanging out with his cousins.
Although The Gold Goose (1978 gold Mercury Grand Marquise), was a family car, Junior kept the keys and the car from his sister Terri almost all the time. Obie Sr. told them not to let anyone drive the car. However, word on the street is there's at least 10 people who have their drivers license thanks to Junior and the Goose.
Junior departed this earth too soon, and as he always did, on his own terms. On July 7, 2024, heaven and his family gained an angel. He was preceded in death by William and Roberta Bedford and Charles and Lenna Sutton (Grandparents), Harold Buril (Bonus dad); Timmy Sutton (Uncle); Wanda Bedford (Aunt), Shon Bedford (Brother-Cousin), and Carmelita Houston (Bonus Sister). He leaves to mourn his parents, Phyllis, Obie, and Ora (bonus mother); his sons, Chris Chase, Issac Bedford (Jessica), and Jacob Bedford; his grandson Isaiah, Giselle (bonus granddaughter); his sisters, Teresa Brown, Natanya Williams and Twanelia Cannon; his brother Charles (Sabrina); his aunts Barbara Oliver, Roslyn Tones, Frances Sutton, Vanessa Bracy (Rowland), Tammy Parker, Alice Sutton; his uncles Alfred Bedford (Gail) and Wayne Bedford (Louise); and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.
