Ofelio Torres

Ofelio Torres, beloved husband of 50 years to Gloria, devoted father of Henry (Stephanie) Torres, Aurora (Jose) Cazares, and Judy Torres, and loving grandfather of Henry Ofelio, Jose Rosario III, and Javier Enrique, passed away on December 6, 2025.

Ofelio was born on November 15, 1939, in Axochiapan, Morelos, Mexico, and raised by his mother Maria Hernandez. From selling goods as a child to organizing town events as young man to running a plaster distribution business across Mexico, Ofelio developed the charisma and work ethic that defined his life.

On July 31, 1976, Ofelio married Gloria Escamilla. The two immigrated to Chicago in 1977, and opened Gloria's Tacos, a small Mexican restaurant, that they ran for 38 years. Together they built a livelihood, and Gloria's Tacos became the heart of their home.

Ofelio was an extraordinary father who deeply valued education and family. Ofelio often said he was the happiest person on earth and in love with life. Ofelio's gratitude, joy, and warm spirit touched everyone Ofelio met. Ofelio will be sorely missed but his legacy will live on through his children and grandchildren.

Visitation will be Sunday, December 14th from 1-6 PM at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home 1104 Waukegan Rd. Glenview, IL 60025 (one block north of Glenview Rd. next to Heinen's Grocery Store, parking is in the rear of the building with additional parking available at Heinen's). The family encourages you to wear vibrant colors to the visitation as a celebration of Ofelio's life and the joy he brought to people. Friends and family will meet Monday, December 15th at St. Joseph Catholic Church 1747 Lake Ave. Wilmette, IL 60091 for a funeral Mass at 10:30 AM. Interment will be at Maryhill Cemetery.
