Opal Lee Welch Childress, age 88, entered into rest on June 15, 2025 surrounded by her loving family.
Opal was born to Mary Thelma Proctor Welch and Jesse Vernon Welch on March 10, 1937 in London, Texas. She met Conway Childress after high school and they were married on February 8th, 1956 in Sweetwater, Texas. Opal is well known for her green thumb and her natural talent for growing flowers and gardening. She was known in the community for her peaches, jellies, and baked goods. She loved to support her community through the London Auxiliary with bake sales and canned goods.
Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Conway and two of their children, Yogi Childress and Dena Cobble. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Dene Wimberley, Evelyn Jo Davis, Vergi Robbins, and her brother Clifton Welch. Opal is survived by 4 of their 6 children; Teresa Edgar, Steven Childress, Scherri Childress, and Angie LeBouef; 13 grandchildren; Corey Childress (Vanessa), Justin Childress, Devere Edwards, Jason Edgar, David Edgar, Aryn Gibbons, Anna Kroeker, Larry Cobble, Chelsea Swarthout, Carsyn LeBouef, James LeBouef, Matthew LeBouef, Courtney Baker, Jacob Childress, and Kayleigh Childress; and 13 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Janet Dawson.
Services will be held Saturday, June 21, 2025 at the First Baptist Church with visitation from 10:00AM - 11:00AM and funeral services at 1:00PM with Pastor Steve Myers officiating. Interment will follow at London Cemetery.
