Orrin Pilkey Obituary

Orrin H. Pilkey

September 19, 1934 - December 13, 2024

Durham, North Carolina - Orrin H. Pilkey, a devoted advocate for the world's shorelines and a cherished friend to many, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2024, at the age of 90.

Orrin began his career studying offshore sediments along the continental east coast as a Duke University geology professor. He was loved by generations of students, many of whom Orrin collaborated with as they started their own careers. When Hurricane Camille destroyed his parents' home in Waveland, Mississippi, Orrin began researching shorelines and beaches, and the problems of beachfront development in rising seas. He became a prolific writer, passionate speaker and an advocate for the protection of beaches.

Orrin ran in marathons in his 40's, starting with the Boston Marathon. His best time was 2 hours and 56 minutes in the New Orleans marathon (no hills) and his worst was 5 hours and 30 minutes in the NC Mountain Marathon (all hills).

He co-authored many books on sea level rise, climate changes and beach processes, on the impacts of mining beach sand and dunes, the need for retreat from shoreline erosion and a book critical of mathematical modeling of beach processes. His full list of books includes two children's books about the nature of beaches, coauthored with one of his sons. Later in life he received distinguished alumni awards from both Washington State and Florida State Universities.

Orrin was married for 60 years to Sharlene Greenaa, a native Alaskan. Together, they raised five children: Charles, Linda, Diane, Keith, and Kerry, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by Sharlene, his brother Walter, and his grandson Cameron.

Orrin never met a person who wasn't an instant, easy friend. His life was filled with both adventure and mischief. Orrin retired at Croasdaile village in Durham, where he lived among many companions as he continued to write. The family is planning a future memorial service to honor Orrin's remarkable life and legacy.

I arrived in Puerto Rico in April 1982, a month after the most recent of Orrin's "Mud hopping" papers was hot off the press. Little did I know that I would soon have the opportunity to work under the tutelage of Orrin and Dave Bush while working for the PRDNER and the USGS. Always a friend with priceless insight and advice on how to advance my career and become an advocate for a better world.

Dr. Orrin H. Pilkey was my professor, friend and advocator. As one of his international students in the late 80s, he made sure he and Sharlene served as family on many occasions (holidays, and even my wedding). He was never too busy to give an opinion or lend a helping hand. He had a kind and generous heart. Thanks for making a lasting impact on my life.
To his family, I want to extend my condolences.
Rest in peace Dr. Pilkey.

Orin was my geology professor in 1975 and I am indebted to him for building my interest in coastal issues in North Carolina. I am thankful that I recently visited and had lunch with him.
