John Davis Pilkey, 82, passed away peacefully, attended by his wife and daughter, on August 5th, 2024 at his home in Ottawa, Kansas. John was born in Kansas City, Missouri on February 6th, 1942 to parents Norman John Pilkey and Mary Lorraine (Davis) Pilkey. John married Marilyn Ruth Johnson in Kansas City in 1968 and had one daughter with her, Alice Ruth Pilkey.
John attended Tufts University as an undergraduate and was admitted into the Tufts Society of Scholars as well as Phi Beta Kappa in 1963. He graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in 1964. In 1969, he graduated with an M.A. from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. In 1974, he earned a Ph.D. from Kansas University and in 1975, a Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary.
In the summer of 1975, John moved to Santa Clarita, California to teach English and Art History at Los Angeles Baptist College (later renamed The Master's College) where he remained until his retirement in 2003. He enjoyed amateur astronomy as well as jazz music, collecting thousands of recordings over the years and playing the piano by ear.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and (Mary) Lorraine Pilkey. He is survived by his wife Marilyn (Johnson) Pilkey, daughter Alice Pilkey, son-in-law Ramón Veloso, sister Christine (Pilkey) Stetzer and nephew Jonathan Stetzer. His family will honor his wishes with a private gathering. Lawrence Chapel Oaks Cremation & Funeral Services is honored to serve the family.
