Orville "Bud" Bakeman died peacefully on July 19 at age 93. He leaves behind many who loved him. Bud was born on May 11, 1926, in White Pigeon, Mich. Upon graduation from high school he joined the Navy in 1944, and then earned an engineering degree from Michigan State. He met his future wife Marian while at college. Bud entered the Navy at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, serving as a radar technician, and was stationed on a ship in Honolulu at the conclusion of WWII. He began his career as an electrical engineer at GE conducting pioneering work in television, and gradually transitioning into military radar systems. He held six laser patents with GE and finished his career working on the Over the Horizon radar system. He was the last man to wear a bowtie and a pocket protector. A lifelong hunter, dog lover, and fisherman, he became a part-time farmer after retiring. He always maintained that retirement was the best decision he ever made, because it allowed him to get to know his grandchildren Delia, Kalia, and Zoe. He volunteered with the Gideons for many years, was an active supporter of the Rescue Mission, and a loyal congregant of Trinity Fellowship. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider donating to one of these fine non-profits. Predeceased by his wife Marian, His family includes daughter Lynn Bakeman of Syracuse; son Mark (Sharleen) Bakeman of Olympia Wash.; their daughter Delia Bakeman (Tom Samblanet) of Westborough, Mass.; son James (Rebecca) Bakeman of St. Louis, Missouri; and daughter Julia (Aki) Toumasis and their daughters Kalia and Zoe Toumasis of Long Beach, Calif. Calling hours will be held on Monday, July 22 from 4-7 pm at Burns-Garfield Funeral Home, 3175 East Genesee St. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10 am at Erwin First United Methodist Church, 920 Euclid Ave Syracuse NY 13210

Dear neighbors, dear Bakemans, dear lifelong friends, Lynne, Mark James, Julia, I mark with sadness Bud's passing at the same time that I celebrate his long life, living in his own home, being himself, and connected to all of you. There's so many years, so much neighborhood history to remember. Backyard birthday parties, dog walks, borrowed tools, Wendy's (complaining the whole time) lawn mowing.....constant, trustworthy. I miss you, Mr. Bakeman!

Bud was our next door neighbor on Stratford Street. Even though we only knew him briefly, he was warm and friendly. He would bring us a sprig of holly during Christmas and his conversation was always engaging. We will miss him dearly. Our hearts go out to his family.

Bud always enjoyed coming out to our farm and visiting with our Tennessee Walking Horses. Here is a picture is from his first visit, standing with Sara and our mottled gray horse Lightnin' who was named for the white streak on his flank.

When Bud first walked into the barn, he was standing in a walkway between two horse stalls. He felt his straw hat starting to wiggle back and forth, and discovered that Lightnin' was checking it out to decide if it could be his lunch.

Well, Bud took evasive action, and Lightnin' desisted, probably figuring out that dry, processed straw was gastronomically inferior to good hay or pasture grass. We all got quite a chuckle out of this encounter.

Bud, many of us spent a lot of good years together at GE and afterwards. You are in our hearts and minds, and in our thoughts. And we will truly miss you.

Condolences to Bud's sons and daughters, and to his grandchildren. I recall a lovely evening in Bud and Marian's home in Syracuse, when Delia was a tiny baby. Fond memories. -- Beti Gunter and Mike Smith

Dear Bakeman Family,
My family is saddened to learn of Bud's passing. He and Marian were dear friends for many years when my family lived in Syracuse, and he and I sang in the Euclid Methodist Choir together. He was a good man. Keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers. Diane, Mike, and Ben Spitz
