Otho Campbell Obituary

Published by Storke Funeral Home-Bowling Green Chapel on Nov. 19, 2015.
Dr. Otho Carlino Campbell passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 18th, 2015 – following several years of declining health. He was preceded in death by his identical twin brother, Preston, and the family finds peace in the knowledge that the two of them are once again together. Born at the height of the Great Depression in 1933, the twins shared good times and bad and always together, from Richmond, to Sparta, to hitch-hiking across the country. Dr. Campbell spent two years in the US Army during the Korean War and then attended the University of Richmond on the GI Bill. He went on to earn a Masters Degree from American University and a PhD from The University of Virginia, and was a much beloved professor of History at Mary Washington College for almost 40 years, where his Civil War and Colonial Virginia lectures were enjoyed by all. An avid reader and world-traveler, Otho was a true renaissance man. He particularly loved spending time with his family and friends. He was also a great lover of animals – known for his willingness to take in and care for stray dogs and cats. A past-time which brought much amusement to his friends and much joy to his life. Among his proudest achievements were restoring the family's ancestral farmhouse in Sparta, VA, and his original research into Virginia History. Several strokes made his last years a struggle, but his good nature in the face of this final adversity was an inspiration to all. Otho is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alice Jo (Barker); their three sons, Preston, Otho, and Ben, and 10 grandchildren. Services will be held at Salem Baptist Church, Sparta, VA, 12 noon Saturday, November 21, with visitation for family and friends starting at 11:00 and burial in the church cemetery and a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Salem Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, 24032 Sparta Road, Milford, VA. 22514.

I was a student of Dr. Campbell's in Mary Washington in the late 70's and credit him for igniting in me a lifelong passion for the history of Central Virginia and the South. He was a wonderful teacher and I still remember him fondly.

I'd like to extend my sincere condolences to the Campbell family. Dr. Campbell was an exemplary professor and a true Virginia gentleman who shared his knowledge gracefully with his students. I wish God's greatest blessings upon the family in this sorrowful time.
