Owen W. Murray

Owen William "Bill" Murray of Leesburg, Virginia (formally Conklin, New York) went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 26, 2024. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a two-year battle with cancer. Bill is survived by the love of his life and soulmate of 43 years, Donna Lee, their two daughters, Decia (Ian) Stringer and Lindsey (David Jr.) Burt, along with his cherished granddaughters, Emma and Avery Stringer and grand puppy, Trucks Brady Burt. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Owen and Norma Murray; and his in-laws, Robert and Marian Smith. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Robert Smith; sister-in-law, Gail (Bobby) Fancher; and brother-in-law, Richie (Michele) Smith as well as several loving nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, and very dear cousins.
Bill was born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 3rd, 1946. He graduated from Lincoln Sudbury High School where he competed in soccer and hockey. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served for four years.
Following his military service, Bill was hired by Singer-Link and then began his career of 50+ years with Doron Precision Systems servicing and selling simulator systems around the world. He started as a field service technician, then moved up the ranks to international sales, and ended his tenure as Vice President. He truly enjoyed all the connections and relationships made. Donna, who was also employed at Doron, will forever be grateful that he mustered up the courage to approach her at the soda machine to strike up a conversation that led to their forever love story.
Bill was a strong family man and was always known to have a smile on his face. On any given day, you could find Bill wearing a Hawaiian Shirt and straw hat or sporting a Patriots/Red Sox shirt and baseball cap. He was a tried and true "Dance Dad" attending his daughters dance competitions and recitals whether it was sitting in the audience or taping their performances with his camcorder. His sense of humor inspired many home video productions, entertaining with karaoke, grilling, firepit chats, and group hugs. His international work travel allowed him to send postcards to his daughters' classrooms which made them so proud of their dad.
In his free time, Bill enjoyed golfing, family vacations, cruising on his Honda Gold Wing, watching soccer and his New England sports teams, and listening to his favorite classic rock hits from the 70's. Some of his favorite artists included Van Morrison, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, the Beatles and the Eagles. Bill would always carry a speaker on him to share his love of music with everyone around him.
In his later years, Bill and Donna relocated to Virginia to be closer to their daughter, Decia. The proximity provided him with the opportunity to attend countless softball tournaments and basketball games of his granddaughters. "Papa" was their number one fan and expressed his love for sports through their competitive pursuits. Upon retiring, Bill and Donna cherished six years as snowbirds in Florida, near their daughter Lindsey. Bill spent his retirement years never wasting a moment, dedicating his time to physical fitness and learning. He achieved remarkable strength and conditioning for his age through his commitment to weightlifting and elliptical training. He had a deep passion for reading history and analyzing information. Bill delved into numerous biographies of historical figures, demonstrated keen insights as an observer and participant in financial markets, and meticulously researched ratings and opinions in Consumer Reports before making any major purchases. Beyond personal enjoyment, he was devoted to applying his knowledge for the betterment and wellbeing of his family.
Bill was best known for his quick wit, fascinating stories and great sense of humor. He loved his daily riddles and jokes with his granddaughters. To his family, Bill was the best husband and friend, devoted father, and grandfather. His daughters were his pride and joy and both sons-in-law brought so much love and happiness into his family.
Despite growing up in the challenging environment of Boston's projects, he recognized and appreciated his many blessings. He took pride in his achievements, given his modest upbringing. However, for him, true success was never centered on material things. What mattered most to Bill was spending time with and sharing his successes with his family and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Alexander Spira of Virginia Cancer Specialists (VCS) and Next Oncology for their care and support of Bill during his last two years.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, corner of Court and Fayette Streets, Binghamton, Saturday February 17, 2024 at 12 noon. The family will receive friends at St. Mary's Church Saturday February 17, from 11 a.m. until l2 noon.
