P. Michael Murphy

P. Michael Murphy of Middletown, RI – best known as Murph – passed away peacefully at home on February 21, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Michael is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Leslie (Tessier), his sons Kyle (Jeanne-Marie), Camden (Amanda) and the joys of his life; granddaughter Nova Jane and grandsons Killian and Oliver.

Murph grew up in Yorkville, NY the son of the late Jane and William Murphy. He is predeceased by his brother Martin and sister Kathleen. He leaves behind his twin sister Patricia (Steve) DeRosa brother Bill (brother-in-law, Frank Antonelli), sister-in-law Patricia Murphy and many cherished nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, loving in-laws and countless friends from near and far.

Michael attended Whitesboro Central Schools, excelling in football, basketball and baseball and was a graduate of Cortland State University. Mike fell in love with the Newport area, and Leslie, in the mid-seventies and have made it their home ever since.

He had a long career in the local hospitality business. Following a stint at The Black Pearl and Manager of the former Yesterdays in Washington Square Mike joined Horizon Beverage and worked there for many years before retiring. His retirement was spent loving his son's, spoiling his grandchildren, working part-time at Wanumetonomy Country Club, and playing golf full-time as a member of Green Valley Country Club, usually followed by meeting his folks at Cappy's. Michael was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Newport.

The family extends their gratitude to the nurses and CNAs from Hope Hospice for the tender care they provided Michael in his final days. A special thank you to Michelle.

A man of honor, decency and good humor, Murph's legacy is always reminding people to "do the right thing".

Calling hours will be Thursday, February 26th, 4:00-7:00 PM at the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, February 27th at St. Joseph's Church, corner of Broadway & Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery, 465 Browns Ln, Middletown.
