Pat grew up on a chicken farm, the youngest of three children. Her brother, Jim, had already left for military service, and her sister, Helen, had just gotten married. She regularly played the piano, swam in the backyard creek, and attended a small schoolhouse, graduating in a class of 17 students. As a testament to her life-long love of nature, she served as Dianne's Girl Scout Troop Leader and enjoyed tent camping with her family too many times to count.
Pat loved to travel, and travel she did. She traveled with Jim to Australia, New Guinea, and New Zealand, where she got to hold a koala bear, living out a long-held dream. She also learned to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef, which became a beloved pastime throughout her life. A regular visitor to Canada, she took two heli-hiking trips - ever the adventurer. She traveled to all 50 United States, including two cruises to Alaska, where she enjoyed visiting many national parks. She loved hiking trails and walking on sandy beaches - she was a nature lover through and through.
A particular favorite locale was the Caribbean. With her daughter, Dianne, her brother, Jim, and her sister-in-law, Barbara, they sailed to numerous islands, favoring St. John's. She loved to relax by snorkeling and simply floating on the waves. Once, the captain of their ship got on a paddleboard to bring Pat back to the ship as she had floated too far from the ship for anyone's comfort. Another time, on St. Kitt's, Pat and Dianne had to be rescued by two young men when they found themselves kayaking in a circle while the rest of their group had left them behind. They made a perfect landing to the applause of the entire beach.
Alongside Dianne, Jim, and Barbara, Pat ventured to Panama and the San Blas Islands with an extended excursion to Bocas del Toro with Dianne. In a room over the water, they were served fresh food from a local market and guided by a local where they saw a sloth in the wild, held a poison dart arrow frog, and visited a blue-footed boobie tree. Overall, the trip was spectacular.
In later years, Pat and Jim traveled to Great Britain, touring England, Scotland, and Wales for their 50th wedding anniversary. They had a fabulous time, including attending the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and enjoying the rugged coastline and national parks of Wales.
What she will be remembered for the most was her love of life, friends, and family. From hosting parties to cooking family meals, Pat Briscoe was ever the caretaker and center of her family's world.
