Chris Leakas Obituary
Chris Peter Leakas, age 74, originally of Columbus, Ohio, passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada, on April 30, 2025. Born and raised in Columbus, Chris graduated from Upper Arlington High School and went on to earn a teaching degree from the University of Toledo. He carried with him a deep love for his hometown and the friendships he formed throughout his life.
In the early 1970s, after college, Chris joined the family business, Leakas Furs, where he discovered his love for fine craftsmanship and helping people feel valued. In the late 1980s, Chris decided to build on his experience and opened his own business, New York Furs. He cared deeply about doing great work, always gave his best, and treated everyone with kindness. He earned not just respect in the fur business, but the lasting appreciation of the many customers who came to know him. Chris was also served as the Vice President/ Partner of Riverview Country Club of Powell.
On July 27th, 1990 Chris wed the love of his life, Barb, and the two began a new chapter together in Las Vegas. There, Chris pursued his lifelong passion for education by teaching History and Geography to junior high students in the Clark County School District, where he taught for over 30 years. In addition to his teaching career, Chris also proudly coached as an assistant basketball coach, mentoring and inspiring countless young athletes.
Chris was a devoted member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Columbus, where, as a young boy, he served as an altar boy and later sang in the church choir. His faith and connection to the church remained a meaningful part of his life throughout the years.
Committed to lifelong learning, Chris earned both his Master's and Doctorate degrees from Nova University. He later taught online educational leadership courses at North Central University. His passion for educating others is a reflection of his belief in the power of knowledge.
Chris will be remembered for his generous spirit, sense of humor, and unwavering dedication to his work, his students, and his loved ones. He touched the lives of many through his teaching, coaching, and kindness.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Leakas; his children, Nicole (Tate) Borcoman and Timothy (Nicole) Leakas; his grandchildren, Kennedy, Kampbell, and Kooper Borcoman, Michael Leakas, and Camden Kingery; and his brother, Ted (Veta) Leakas. Chris is preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Loula Leakas, and his brother, Dean Leakas.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 20th, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 10:30 a.m. at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 555 High Street, Columbus, OH 43215. Interment Green Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Chris's honor.
