Patricia Ann Cadena, a cherished mother, sister, dedicated educator, and woman of profound faith, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on March 5, 1937, Patricia lived a life marked by unwavering kindness, wisdom, and an infectious zest for living.
Pat, as she was affectionately known, was a brilliant scholar, earning her Master's degree in Mathematics from her beloved alma mater, the University of Illinois. She dedicated an astounding 41 years to teaching, primarily at the high school level, leaving an indelible mark on thousands of students before her retirement in 2002.
Patricia's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. She served as a nun for 23 years, embodying a deep commitment to her spiritual calling. Even after leaving the convent, her active involvement in the church continued tirelessly throughout her life. In her retirement, she generously volunteered her time at various organizations, most notably with the Rotary Club at St. Vincent de Paul, where she worked with the homeless. Her spiritual journey also included a memorable two-week European religious pilgrimage in 2002.
Music was a constant source of joy for Pat. An avid singer, her beautiful voice graced both church services and her home, and she was a beloved member of her choir family, cherished for both her talent and her vibrant personality. Some of her favorite songs included "On Eagles Wings," "Mairzy Doats," and "You Are My Sunshine," and she held a special admiration for Mario Lanza.
A true Chicagoan at heart, Pat was an unyielding fan of her city's sports teams: the Bears, Cubs, Bulls, and White Sox. She also passionately followed her alma mater, the Illinois Fighting Illini, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. She embraced life with enthusiasm, enjoying Jazzercise classes and memorable trips, including The Weekly Standard cruise and a trip to New York in 2006.
Patricia's greatest treasure was her family. She was a loving sister to Elinore, Ed, and Dave. While her early years spent with her Uncle Dave humorously gave her a "younger sister complex," their bond was strong, and he loved her dearly. She was a cherished cousin to Lorraine and her husband George. Her childhood companion, a dog named Friday, held a special place in her heart.
She had an expansive heart, loving all her grandchildren unconditionally, whether by blood or by bond. Her son fondly notes how his daughter, Rose, bears a striking resemblance to her beloved grandmother. Family traditions, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings hosted by her sisters, featuring her famous roast turkey and all the fixings, were highlights. Weddings were always a great party for Mom, filled with laughter and dancing.
Her son will forever carry the invaluable lessons she instilled in him-on faith and how to be a gentleman-lessons that will always be a part of him. Her enduring sense of humor and her unwavering love of Chicago sports are also deeply ingrained. He finds comfort and strength in his supportive choir family, siblings, cousins, and their children. The mere mention of Ventura will always evoke cherished memories of Mom.
Patricia's kindness, cheerfulness, strength, and wisdom touched everyone she met. She will be profoundly missed, but her spirit, her humor, and her boundless love will live on in the hearts of all those she loved and inspired.
