Obituary published on Legacy.com by Holloway Funeral Home - Salisbury on Jul. 26, 2024.
Coach Patrick Morris Briscoe died peacefully at home on July 23rd 2024, just over a week after his 81st birthday celebration. He was surrounded by family as he had been his entire life. He is now reunited with his wife of 58 years, Brenda, who passed away in October 2023.
He was born on July 13th, 1943, and raised in Ridgely, MD by his mother, Sara Elizabeth "Betty" Briscoe and was the son of Edwin "Pat" Briscoe.
Pat had a strong work ethic and excelled in sports at an early age. He was Co-Captain of the Football team, Captain of Wrestling team and Class Vice President at North Caroline High School. He met his bride Brenda at North Caroline and graduated with honors in 1961.
After high school, he attended Glenville State University on a Football scholarship. He was Captain of the Football and Wrestling teams. Pat was also a member of the TKE fraternity and President of the student body. He graduated in 1965 with degrees in Physical Education, Social Studies, and Drivers Education. He later earned his Master's in Education from Salisbury University.
Pat and Brenda married on August 8th in 1965. He began coaching Wrestling and had the honor of coaching Football beside his friend, mentor, and father gure, Thomas Bailey at James M. Bennett High School. In 1975, when Parkside High School opened its doors, Coach Briscoe started the Wrestling and Football programs. He was The Star Democrat's Wrestling Coach of the Year by 1977. He taught Drivers Education at all three high schools through the early 90's. Briscoe coached Football at Parkside through 1989 and Wrestling for several more years. He stepped in to coach the Wicomico High School Football team for the 1992 season. In addition to coaching Football, Wrestling, and teaching Driver's Education, he worked with kids in Con ict-Resolution, a rewarding passion he loved to talk about. He helped confused students nd their direction and many stayed in touch with him years later. His strong stature was always paired with wise words and truth. He retired in 2002 after 37 years in education.
There are too many champions and trophies to list, but mentoring and molding kids were always more important than the wins and losses.
In 1992, he was inducted into the Maryland State Wrestling Hall of Fame. In 2004, he was inducted into the Maryland State Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Oklahoma for a lifetime of service to the sport, the community, and the young people he coached, taught, and inspired.
After retirement, he worked as Stadium Manager at the Wicomico County Football Field. It was an art and a science for Coach Briscoe until he retired because of his illness in 2023. He also volunteered with the Wicomico Wolverines Wrestling team.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Sara Elizabeth (Betty) Briscoe and Edwin Briscoe, his wife Brenda, and too many friends and family to name. He is survived by his adopted son Darrell (Ann) Brow, of Lutherville, MD, Michelle (Craig) Shreeves of
Salisbury, MD and Nita Briscoe of Lexington, KY, his four grandchildren: Patrick and Lily Brow of Lutherville, MD, Brady Shreeves of St. Petersburg, FL, and Makenzie Shreeves of
Salisbury, MD.
He was a father to three and a grandfather to four, but he was a role model to generations of kids in Wicomico County. Coach Briscoe stepped up as a father gure buying clothes, food, giving rides from practice- and counsel to anyone and everyone who needed it. His family is grateful and amazed by all the visits and calls from former players and students of all ages who have shared memories and stories.
Special thanks to Tidal Health Nurses and Staff who took such great care of him and gave him the nickname "Handsome." They were the highlight of his day. The family also appreciates his amazing Hospice team during his last chapter before God called him home.
Visitation will be held at Holloway Funeral Home 501 Snow Hill Road Friday August 2nd 2024, 5p-7p and 9a-10a on Saturday, August 3rd, 2024. Service is at 10a Saturday, August 3rd, 2024 and interment will follow.
In lieu of owers, contributions may be made in Patrick Briscoe's memory to Coastal Hospice or the Pat Briscoe Award at the Community Foundation, 1324 Belmont Avenue, Ste 401,
Salisbury, Maryland 21804.
