Patrick (Pat) Joseph Monaghan, age 58, of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away at home suddenly and far too soon on July 27, 2025. He is a beloved husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend.

Pat was born on March 25, 1967, in Annapolis, Maryland, the youngest of four children to Ann Fallon and Richard Monaghan. From an early age, his boundless energy and adventurous spirit were evident –he dreamed of being like Evel Knievel, fearlessly performing bicycle stunts that left him with scars and even a few broken bones. He spent his entire youth in Annapolis, attending Saint Mary's School before graduating from Annapolis High School in 1985. While in junior high school, he met his future wife, Betsy Hopkins, though it would be over a decade before they began dating, eventually eloping in 1995.

Pat's connection to the water defined much of his life and he spent his entire career working on the water. Beginning in the late 1980s, he sailed the east coast as a crew member aboard both the Mystic Clipper and its sister ship, the Mystic Whaler, and then all over the world on the Pride of Baltimore II. He ultimately became a highly skilled rigger and splicer ensuring countless sailboats were seaworthy and ready for adventure. Beyond his maritime talents, Pat had a sharp sense of humor, a passion for history, and a love of music. At age 40, he joyfully returned to drumming after receiving a drum set as a birthday gift, rekindling a cherished hobby. It would be remiss to not call out that he was a fantastic cook and made every gathering and holiday better when he generously showed up with some of his Maryland crab soup or crab cakes, as he was oft to do.

Pat's greatest joy was his family, and he leaves behind many who love and miss him very much, including his wife of nearly 30 years, Betsy Monaghan (née Hopkins); his daughters, Fallon Monaghan and Lauren Gonzalez (David Van Benschoten); his grandchildren Annabelle, Emmie, and Jude; his parents, Richard Monaghan and Ann Fallon (John Wells); his siblings Bill Monaghan, Catherine Flannery (Chris), Daniel Wells (Laura), and Christine Sweigart (Daniel); his mother-in-law Libby Hopkins; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends, and his black Labrador, Molly. Pat was preceded in death by his dear brother, Tim Monaghan, and his father-in-law, Jim Hopkins.

A funeral service to celebrate Pat's life will be held on Friday, August 8, at 10 a.m. at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Avenue, Annapolis, Maryland 21401. All who love Pat are warmly invited to attend.

Pat's warmth, humor, and unwavering love for his family and friends will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him. It's not goodbye, but until we meet again

Yesterday

I am deeply saddened to learn of Pat´s crossing the bar. Rico was my mate on Mystic Whaler in 1988. He was an excellent mate and became a good friend. I thoroughly enjoyed being his shipmate. Fair Winds, Pat.

Oh boy what shocking news!
We had many many laughs on the Mystic Clipper, Mystic Whaler, and Pride of Baltimore 2. If I had to pick one special moment.........
Tony Arrow bought a fancy moped and brought it back to park right on the Whaler dock. Pat asked Tony if he could try it out for a quick spin. Tony reluctantly said ok, but"no tricks Pat".....he gunned it at the end of the dock and failed to slow down for the 90 degree turn towards shore, later claiming that the throttle jammed. I was 30 feet away and I´ll never forget the look on his face midair as he sailed off into the drink.
RIP Pat
