February 11, 1958 – January 5, 2025 It is with a heavy heart that we announce the unexpected passing of our dear brother, uncle, and friend, Patrick E. Spencer. Pat passed away in the town of Wilson, NC where he had just begun his retirement years. Patrick was born in Lewiston, Maine to Lawrence Spencer and Alfreda (Greenlaw) Spencer, of Auburn, ME. Between Pat’s 14th-15th year, he came to live permanently with best childhood friend, David Macdonald and his blended family. David’s stepfather, George Lahey and mother, Glennice (Dean MacDonald) Lahey gladly welcomed Patrick into their home and family, accepting him as one of their own.

During high school, Pat and Dave joined the Lewiston Pinetree Warriors drum and bugle corps and enjoyed years with their friends and fellow PT warriors competing throughout the Northeast. Pat played contrabass – Dave, drums. Patrick was a 2nd big brother to Pete MacDonald (the youngest of the household). Many happy memories were made at “Georgios Pizzeria” in Auburn, playing pinball and arcade games and enjoying pizza and Italian sandwiches, which Pat claimed in later years was the “main reason” he came back to “The Frozen Tundra of Maine.”

Pat graduated from Edward Little High School and served in the Navy from 1976 – 1981. During that time Pat enjoyed traveling via motorcycle through the South and became very fond of the people, the food, and the hospitality he encountered. Pat worked at Bath Iron Works shipyard and Blue Cross/Blue Shield in the IT department for a few years each before moving to Herndon, VA to work in the IT field for the banking industry, and later to Wilson, NC; Birmingham, AL; Selma, NC; and finally back to Wilson, NC where he recently retired as CICS Systems Programmer at First Citizens Bank.

In Maine, Pat spent summer days accompanying Dave’s & Pete’s friends and extended family on road trips around Maine such as Moose Caves (Yes, this is a place, unlike “Moose Butte, Maine” as Pat loved to tell his Southern friends), and camping in Baxter State Park, where he showcased his “fire building skills” with “Boy Scout Juice.” We sure had fun. Thanks, Pat!

In North Carolina, Patrick was a devout Catholic gentleman and active member of the Knights of Colombus. He enjoyed helping at fundraisers that support the church, community and Veteran’s Residential Services of Wilson. Patrick was extremely generous and donated selflessly to anyone he found that needed assistance.

He enjoyed playing poker with the crew and spending time relaxing and shooting at a farm he had just purchased. Some of Pat’s Maine family were occasionally blessed to spend time with him down South where they met the family he’d created there, and we wish to thank Pat’s close friends, especially Tony Gaetano for being there for Patrick in his last moments and many other times unknown to us. Patrick was predeceased by both biological parents and his Chosen Parents, George and Glennice Lahey; his brother, David and nephew Tyson Macdonald; his brother-in-law, Roger and niece Belinda James.

Pat leaves behind his brother, Pete and sister-in-law, Mary MacDonald, of Auburn, ME; his niece, Danielle (MacDonald) and her husband, Sean Lawrence of Burnham, ME and their children, Lunar, Solon, and Oswin; niece, Misha MacDonald of Brunswick, ME; nephew, Dustin Macdonald of Leeds, ME; sister, Paula (Macdonald) James and great niece, Audrey Hersi; sister, Leslie and brother-in-law Denis Libby; nephews Douglas and Jeremy Libby; sister, Colleen Lahey and her husband, Dick Soucy, and many friends and colleagues.

Patrick Spencer, you surely have been an inspiration and proof that being dealt a poor hand in early life doesn’t mean you give up. You made your way. We’ll miss you forever.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Therese Church at 700 Nash St. in Wilson, NC on April 11th, 2025 at 12 pm.

In Lieu of cards or flowers please send donations to Veteran’s Residential Services Wilson at 2500 Nash St. N, Suite E, Wilson, NC 27896. 252 237-4778
