In early September 1961, several of my grade seven St. Peter's friends and I decided to form a football team, and thus issue game challenges to the other Catholic grammar schools in our city. Of course, we neglected to consider one essential requirement for success...the need for good coaching.
Fortunately, upon hearing of our undeveloped plan, our splendid parish curate, Father Donald Gonyner arranged for Butch Coffey and Billy Donovan to assume the coaching reins. We surely knew of Butch and Billy, for they had both been outstanding football players at St. Peter's High, and we were thrilled to learn the news. Yet however roused we were, Butch and Billy both exceeded our lofty expectations. Both young men possessed a textbook knowledge of football and a coaching demeanor that brought out the best in all of us.
Years later, when I entered the coaching profession, I often thought back of those two young men and how, at such an early age, they had defined the best of coaching.
While I lost contact with Butch over the years, I certainly never forgot the great work that he and Billy did with our young team.
My condolences to the Coffey Family over the loss of a terrific and highly influential guy.
RIP Butch.
