Paul Dittmann

Paul Dittmann, 98, of Chambersburg passed away on August 26, 2022 at Chambers Point Health Care Center. Born May 20, 1924 in Chambersburg, he was the son of William Vandrau and Ruth Branthaver Dittmann. Paul graduated from Chambersburg High School in 1942. He served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army during WWII. After the war he returned to Chambersburg and worked at Letterkenny Army Depot as a firefighter. He then went to work for and retired from Horn s Motor Express in Chambersburg. Paul worked in the office, and he was one of the last employees as Horn s closed for good on the day he retired, 41 years later.
Paul was very involved in the Masonic Organization both at the local and state level. He was most proud to have served as the Most Pussiant Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Master Masons of Pennsylvania and to have served the George Washington Council No. 66 as their Thrice Illustrious Master. He also a member of the George Washington Lodge No. 143 F&AM of Chambersburg and served the George Washington Chapter No. 176. He was a 33rd Degree Mason and served in the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, the Valley of Harrisburg, PA. He was Past Commander of the Continental Commandery No. 56, and Past President of the Shippensburg Scottish Rite Club. He also served as Past Sovereign Master of the Sovereign Council No. 103. Paul was recognized by the former Mayor of Chambersburg, William Stover in 1978 for his achievement in Cryptic Masonry.
Paul was honored in 2013 for his 70 years of Continuous Membership with the American Legion with Post 46 of Chambersburg. He served his community as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Department of Public Welfare for several years. He was a long time member of Zion Reformed Church, UCC and served for many years as the superintendent of the Sunday school. Paul passed his love of cars on to his son as together they owed and showed their 1957 Ford Thunderbird within the Antique Automobile Club of America.
Paul is survived by his long time companion, Pat Slayton, his daughter, Julie Schuchman, his son Gerald P. Dittmann and his wife Kathy; two grandsons, Thomas Starr and wife Jamie Lynn, and Andrew T. Dittmann and wife Amy; his granddaughter Sara E. Clark and husband Zac; three great grandchildren, Gabriel, Naomi, Silas and several nephews and cousins.
A Masonic service will be conducted by members of George Washington Lodge #143 F&AM at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center at 11:00 AM on September 16, 2022. A memorial service will follow with Rev. Thomas Dunkle officiating. There will be a private interment after the service in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, Chambersburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in Paul s memory be made to Zion Reformed Church, UCC 259 South Main, Street, Chambersburg, PA.
