Paul Herbert Engelmann was born on July 20, 1945, in
Webster Groves, Missouri, to Herbert L. Engelmann and Elsa K. Engelmann. He lived a life devoted to education, service, family, friends and faith.
Paul was raised alongside his sister, Carol Davenport of Centennial, Colorado. From a young age he developed a love of music and musicals learning to play the piano and singing in multiple choirs and musical productions. He graduated from Webster Groves High School in June 1963, then earned his bachelor's degree in Business and Economics from Drury College in Springfield, Missouri, in June 1967 where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. He went on to complete his PhD in Economics at Oklahoma State University in June 1976 and earned his pilot license during this time.
On March 2, 1974, Paul married Elizabeth Sue Schmidli Flippin. Together they shared a loving marriage and raised two daughters, Stacy Flippin of O'Fallon, Illinois, and Courtney (Sean) Cooper of Lexington, Kentucky. Paul was a proud grandfather to two granddaughters, Kaely Elizabeth and Kathryn Diann, both of Lexington, Kentucky.
Paul dedicated the majority of his professional life to the University of Central Missouri, where he began his career in December 1971, when the institution was known as Central Missouri State College. In August 1979, he became Head of the Department of Economics, later serving as Chair of the Department of Economics and Finance. He was named Associate Dean of the Harmon College of Business in July 2003. Paul officially retired in June 2008 but continued teaching until May 2017, reflecting his deep commitment to students and education. During his career, he also taught for Boston University in West Germany during the 1987-1988 academic year where he enjoyed traveling with his family throughout Europe.
In addition to his academic leadership, Paul played a significant role in collegiate athletics governance. He was named NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative in August 1981, a position he proudly held until July 2017. He participated in numerous NCAA and MIAA committees throughout his career. He served as the NCAA Division II Parliamentarian from 1993 until 2022, chaired the Division II Management Council from 2001 to 2002, and served as President of the MIAA in 1996-1997. His work in athletics was recognized with the Conference Commissioners Association Service Award; the MIAA Dedicated Service Award and the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives Association David Knight Award for outstanding service. He was inducted into the UCM Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012.
Paul also served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves and the National Guard from 1968 to 1979. During his service, he was a drill sergeant in the Army Reserves and a crew chief on a UH-1H helicopter in the National Guard.
Paul was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in
Warrensburg, Missouri. He sang in the church choir for many years finding joy and fellowship through music and worship. In addition to serving on numerous church committees, he also served the Warrensburg community as a member of Pioneer Trails Regional Planning Commission and as Treasurer for Friends of Music.
Paul will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, intelligence, dedication to service, and devotion to his family and friends. His influence as an educator, mentor, and leader touched countless lives and he will be missed by many.
Visitation will take place at the Warrensburg First United Methodist Church on Friday, December 19 at 2:00PM with a Celebration of Life following at 3:00PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church or UCM Athletics.
