Longtime Nashua resident and retired elected official of Nashua Fire Rescue, Commissioner Paul Andre Garant, 75, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Debra A. Gentile-Garant with whom he shared 46 years together, and 38 years of marriage.
Paul was born February 13, 1948 in Fall River, MA to the late Philias Garant and Dolorosa (Roy) Garant. Philias, an engineer and a commissioner for the Fall River Fire Department ignited Paul's lifetime love of everything fire-related by bringing his newborn son home from the hospital in one of the city's fire trucks.
Growing up, French was the language spoken at home, while church and school intertwined. He graduated from Monsignor Prevost High School in Fall River, MA. He then moved on to the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, graduating with a BS in Public Health with a concentration in Industrial Environmental Microbiology.
UMASS Master's courses ultimately led to the beginning of a long, accomplished career in the medical technologies industry. First with Millipore in Bedford, MA, where he also spent time managing a manufacturing plant in Puerto Rico. He then moved on to CR Bard, in Billerica, MA, ultimately becoming VP of Quality Assurance. With CR Bard came the opportunity to head a manufacturing plant via Cardial outside of Lyon, France. Coming back to the US, he worked for NMT Medical in Boston, MA, which led to him being credited with patents for medical heart devices. Through the years he also was proud of companies he started, one building ambulances, and the other, a consulting firm. Additionally, in retirement, he worked as a substitute teacher for the Nashua School System.
However, through it all, Paul's true love was his civic duties in fire rescue, first working as an EMT in Boston, MA, then volunteer firefighter in Bedford, MA in the early 80's, and ultimately being elected in 2004 as a Fire Commissioner for Nashua Fire Rescue. He recently retired this January after more than 19 years of service.
Paul passionately collected antique fire memorabilia, and recently donated to the Nashua Fire Rescue. He also owned two antique fire trucks, with which he would often appear in many parades with his children, and their ear-to-ear smiles. Additionally, he was passionate about photography, mainly nature and fire related scenes, as well as history, Jeopardy, and an avid college football fan, rarely missing the big games. Above all, though, he most cherished time spent with his loving family.
In addition to his wife, Debra, he is survived by his two children, Sean Christie of Nashua, and Jessica Garant and her partner Larry Palumbo of Nashua; and his grandson, Vito Palumbo. He also leaves two siblings, Philias Garant and his wife, Jeanne, of Port Jefferson, NY and Simone Garant of Port Jefferson, NY; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to Paul's visitation on FRIDAY, February 16th from 4-7pm at ROCHETTE FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, 21 Kingsley Street, Nashua. His Funeral Mass will be held on SATURDAY, February 17th at 10am in Immaculate Conception Church, 216 E. Dunstable Rd, Nashua. KINDLY MEET AT THE CHURCH. My sincere respects to all loved ones of Paul Garant. Paul is the validation of a gentleman of venerable character. Firefighters far and wide respected his brotherhood and his admiration of the firefighting profession. Believe in the truth. It is Biblically documented. Paul is not gone. Gone denotes finality. He is more alive than ever 'away' in the spiritual sphere of Heaven where Angels celebrated his 'coming home.' He exists in eternity. Let that be a lasting shelter of comfort.

Paul was a call firefighter in Bedford MA when I was the fire chief there. He would pop in to the office once a week and we would chat about our love of the fire service. RIP Paul/Commissioner
