Paul Mark Haas

To know Paul was to know the truest kind of greatness - not only in intellect and accomplishment but in kindness, loyalty, and heart.

Paul Mark Haas passed away on August 1, 2025, surrounded by love. He was born on September 6, 1944, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the beloved son of Paul Edmond Haas and Florence Kathryn Haas.

The youngest of eight children, Paul was raised alongside his seven older sisters. Many of his nieces and nephews, older than he was, became lifelong friends and companions in his early years. At age nine, his family moved to Hopewell, Virginia - a change that would ultimately shape the course of his life.

At just 15, Paul met the love of his life, Princess Ann Barton, at the county fair. Neither of them could have imagined that this chance meeting would grow into a seven-year courtship and a marriage that would last for 59 beautiful years.

After graduating from Hopewell High School, Paul went on to attend the University of Virginia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering and proudly called himself a "Virginia Gentleman." Shortly after marrying Princess in August 1966, Paul was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served three years in the Army Corps of Engineers, returning home to meet his newborn son and continue his academic journey. He completed a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, further distinguishing himself in a demanding and impactful field.

Paul was an active member of First United Method Church, Oak Ridge, TN. He was involved in missions and finance.

As many know, he was also a honorary member of the United Women in Faith.

Paul's professional career took him to Brookhaven National Laboratory in Bellport, New York, and later to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1988, he founded Concord Associates, a nuclear engineering consulting firm, which he successfully operated until his retirement.

Paul's legacy is not just measured by his career. He was a brilliant and gracious man whose greatest achievements were the love he gave and the lives he touched. He was a devoted brother to his seven sisters and a cherished uncle to their many children.

He was a beloved father to his son, Geoffrey Haas, and daughter, Kathryn Fenstermaker - guiding them with quiet wisdom and unwavering support. To his four grandchildren, Paul was a gentle, playful, and loving grandfather - a steady presence who filled their lives with joy, learning, and laughter.

Above all, Paul was a steadfast, loyal, and tender-hearted husband. His marriage to Princess was a shining example of enduring love, mutual respect, and joyful partnership.

To say Paul will be missed is an understatement. He was the anchor, the guide, and the heart of his family. His presence made the world warmer, wiser, and infinitely better.
