Paul Halovatch Obituary

Reverend Paul J. Halovatch
June 26, 1943 - December 29, 2025
Reverend Paul J. Halovatch, 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 29, 2025, at Yale New Haven Hospital. Born in New Haven on June 26, 1943, Father was the son of the late Paul J. Halovatch and Ann M. (Turbert) Halovatch.
He attended Notre Dame High School graduating in 1961. He studied for the priesthood at St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield and St. Bernard Seminary, Rochester, NY. Father Halovatch was ordained a priest on May 23, 1970, in the Cathedral of St Joseph by the late Archbishop of Hartford, Most Reverend John F. Whealon. Father served throughout the Archdiocese as assistant at St. Lawrence O'Toole, Hartford, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Meriden, St. Joseph, Canaan, Christ the King, Bloomfield, Our Lady of Fatima, Yalesville, as assistant chaplain at Hartford Hospital, as parochial vicar at St. James, Rocky Hill, SS. Peter & Paul, Waterbury, and as Sacramental Minister at SCSU, New Haven.
When Father was discerning his call to his priestly vocation, he valued the support he received from Reverend Douglas Morrison his parish priest at Saint Paul's in West Haven, and his maternal grandmother. Father loved being a priest and always embraced his vocation. His Masses were always characterized by deep reverence. He had a profound love and respect for the Eucharist. When he traveled, he always brought a Mass kit with him to celebrate Mass in his room. Father was a people's priest invested in the spiritual development and growth of others. His various ministries included conducting Retreats for the Blind, administering the Sacrament of Reconciliation for Rachael's Vineyard retreatants, meeting the sacramental needs for the Lay Missionaries of Charity, serving as Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus, celebrating Mass for the Charismatic Renewal, and providing spiritual direction for parishioners and non-parishioners.
He is survived by his cousins, John Halovatch (Lynn), Eileen Lombardi and Karen Teitel (Paul) and his best friends, Marco Franchi and George Koczon.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Christopher J. Coyne, Archbishop of Hartford, on Monday, January 5th, at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, St. Benedict of Nursia Parish, 382 Hope Hill Rd., Yalesville. Father's relatives and friends will receive guests in the church prior to Mass from 9:00-10:45 AM. Interment will take place at St. Lawrence Cemetery, 280 Derby Ave., West Haven, at 11:00 AM on January 6, 2026. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carolyn's Place Pregnancy Care Center, 137 Grandview Ave., Waterbury, CT 06708.

My brother Thomas, deceased 3 years ago, went to St Thomas Seminary with Father Paul and they quickly became friends. He was a frequest guest of our large family and became one of our close family friend.
There was nothing lofty or sanctimonious about him. He identified with the struggles and moral conflicts of all who came into his presence.
His sense of humor was precious. That's what endeared him to us.

Father Paul was loved by all who attended the retreats for the blind. He was sure to preside even when standing became difficult for him. Sharing time with Father Paul was an important part of the retreat.
