Paul August Jacob III 77 died suddenly Monday July 24 at home. Paul was born in New York, NY and moved with his family to Saddle Brook, NJ when he was 7 years old. He moved to, coincidentally, the same street his future wife, Carolyn, lived on. Though they went to high school together, they never spoke until Paul got out of the Navy in 1967 and bought a 1967 Pontiac GTO, which Carolyn already had. They started waving at each other on Route 4 on the way home from work and then, one day, Paul stopped when he saw Carolyn washing her car which she did constantly, too, as he said, see if she would wash his car. Not true! They fell in love and were married on Friday evening, June 13, 1969, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Fair Lawn, NJ. They were married for 54 wonderful and interesting years. Paul started on the Saddle Brook Police Dept. on April Fool's Day, 1969, and they could only take a week's vacation in Wildwood Crest since that's all the Chief would give him along with the promise, he would stay at least one year. He retired after 25 + years, going up the ranks to become the Chief of Police for the Department, something he was very proud of along with his service in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Caliente from '64 to '67. In 1996 Paul and Carolyn moved to Palm Coast, FL from their home in Saddle Brook where they had been for 19 years, and built their dream home on a Salt Water Canal. Paul became the first Supervisor of Code Enforcement for Flagler County, FL. After five and half years, one day Paul asked Carolyn if she'd like to move. When she said, Where? He said back to New Jersey and so they did to Township of Washington. Then about nine years later they moved to Leisure Knoll, Manchester in Ocean County, NJ. Paul made many friends, ran the Billiard Room, played Cards with a group, was a member of the Veterans Club and loved to play golf with Carolyn. He also loved going to Atlantic City. Paul is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn (nee Benner), who will miss him so much and was joined at the hip with him (unless he was with the guys), his daughter, Kellylyn (Jim) Burns and son, Paul (Jessica) and grandson, Jimmy Burns to whom he was a loving Pop. Also survived by sister-in-law Christine (Roger) deSocarras and sister-in-law Wilma Wichart. Visitation is Wednesday 1-5 PM with a 2 PM Veteran's Service at Oliverie Funeral Home 2925 Ridgeway Rd Manchester. Funeral Service is 9 AM at the funeral home with interment to follow at Brigadier Gen Wm C Doyle NJ Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown. In lieu of flowers, kindly send contributions to Disabled American Veterans 1810 Lanes Mills Rd, Brick, NJ 08723 or your favorite charity.
