The family is sad to report the passing of Paul Eugene Marshall on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at the age of 95. Paul was born in Winston-Salem in 1930 and grew up in the family home known as “the Cabbage Patch” that once stood on the SW corner of Spruce and West 8th streets. In 1945 Paul began attending RJR High school while holding down jobs delivering papers for the Winston-Salem Journal (morning) & Sentinel (afternoon) from 1945-1946 and later as a dry goods delivery assistant for Horne & Co., from 1947-1948. After graduating in 1949, Paul enrolled at UNC Chapel Hill. His scholastic pursuits were interrupted by his service in the U.S. Air Force (1951-1954) where Paul was stationed in Texas, California, England and at the RAF station Edzell, Angus County Scotland. While stationed in California, Paul attended the U.S. Army language school in Monterey to study Russian.
Upon discharge from the Air Force, Paul returned to Chapel Hill and completed his degree in 1956. Paul was awarded the following honors- Phi Beta Kappa, Beta Gamma Sigma and Alpha Kappa Psi. Paul immediately took a position in New York City with Price Waterhouse & Co. It was there that Paul met and married his first wife, Shirley E. Palmer. The brief marriage produced a son, Mark in 1957. In 1963 Paul ventured to Tokyo Japan and took a new position with Lowe Bingham Thompson, a business recently merged with Price Waterhouse & Co. In 1969, Paul returned to Winston-Salem to work for the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co and served in upper management for 20 years. It was soon after his return from Japan that he met and married Carolyn Joan Riddle. Paul and Carolyn first attended Calvary Baptist Church, then Parkway United Church of Christ, and lastly, Calvary Moravian Church. Over the course of his life, Paul enjoyed participating in the Price Waterhouse Old Boys Club (Tokyo), the Winston-Salem Wine Society, the Forsyth Co. Genealogical Society, The Russian Conversation Group, The Forsyth Co. Library, the Toastmasters International at NYC, Yokohama and Winston-Salem, The Tokyo Lawn Tennis Club, the Piedmont NC Senior games (Billiards, woodworking and Poetry), the Winston-Salem third Wednesday Book Club, Reynolda House Travel group, the “Codger Butts” pool shooters, NY and NC association of CPA’s, the Certified Internal Auditor Association (associate member), and the American Chamber of Commerce (Tokyo, Japan).
Paul was predeceased by his parents, James Leroy Marshall and Maude Higgins Marshall, both of Winston-Salem, and Paul’s sister, Virginia Marshall Reichelt of Santa Fe, NM. Carolyn Riddle Marshall, Paul’s loving wife of 53 years, passed in 2023. Paul is survived by one son, two grandchildren, their spouses and six great grandchildren. The son, Mark G. Marshall and his wife Christine A. Marshall reside in Bend, Oregon. Grandson Edward I. Marshall, and his wife, Kristen Walker Marshall and their children, Sydney, Monica and Becca all reside in Lacey, WA.
