Paul E. Tyrell, 76, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family in St. Petersburg, FL, on January 10, 2026, following a brief illness. He was born in Scranton, PA, to Paul M. Tyrell and Grace Lyons Tyrell of Dunmore. He and his wife, the former Ellen Golden, celebrated 51 years of marriage in April 2025. He attended Dunmore schools before attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after being drafted by the United States Marine Corps.

A veteran of Vietnam, he was a proud Marine despite the turmoil he returned to in the United States following his tour of duty. He strongly believed in an ethos of humility over self-promotion, which he learned in the Corps. He carried this philosophy throughout his life, regardless of the situation. He further believed that unity did not require sameness but rather a shared purpose to meet goals for the greater good. He never lost his values of loyalty before dishonor, mission before comfort, and teamwork before self-interest, as he was Semper Fidelis. He was always a champion for the underdog, too.

Prior to his retirement after 30 years, he was the Assistant Chief of the Information Resource Management (IRM) Division at the Department of Veterans Affairs' St. Petersburg Regional Office, with responsibilities spanning the East Coast and Puerto Rico. He was a great asset in the early phases of network development and the initial use of computer technology at VA. He traveled throughout the United States to gain knowledge from IBM, Apple, and other large tech leaders to enhance VA operations with the main mission to assist veterans in a more efficient and timely manner. He received several accolades for innovation during his career but never accepted them as an individual honor. He gave credit for the accomplishments to his team.

His greatest source of personal pride was his son, Matthew. There was nothing he enjoyed more than watching Matt strive for and achieve goals. He consistently worked to instill his values and emphasize the importance of thinking twice before following the crowd.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Stanley and Rachel Fox Golden, brother-in-law, the Honorable Thomas J Golden, several aunts, uncles and cousins, and his beloved German shepherds Queenie and Jessie.

He is survived by his loving wife Ellen, St. Petersburg, Fl., son, Matthew and his wife Maria, Washington, DC, brother Leo Tyrell and his wife Janice, Haddonfield, NJ, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families.

A Blessing Service with Military Honors will be held on Saturday, January 24th at 5pm at the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St. in Dunmore.

Family and friends may pay their respects from 3pm until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, please choose a charity of your choice or a charity that helps children or Disabled American Veterans.

I´m so sorry to hear of Paul´s passing. I worked with him at the VA and live a couple blocks down 46th Ave from your home. I would see him from time to time and actually just thought of him last week when passing by. He was a great guy and my deepest condolences to your family.

Paul and I worked together at the VA Regional Office when located in downtown St. Petersburg, FL. We shared a common interest in playing softball with the office.

Rest in Peace, Paul. You will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Ellen, family and close friends who knew you well
