EAST GREENBUSH - Paul D. VanWormer Sr., age 89, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2026, in Riverview, Fla.
Born on January 8, 1937, in Rensselaer, N.Y., Paul was the son of Ira VanWormer and Edna VanWormer (Smith). He grew up in Rensselaer, and went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Navy, from 1957 to 1959, aboard the U.S.S. Alamo.
Paul dedicated much of his life to community service through his involvement with local fire departments. He was a proud lifetime member of the East Greenbush Volunteer Fire Department, Clinton Heights Volunteer Fire Department, and the JN Ring Volunteer Fire Department. His commitment to public safety and volunteerism left a lasting impact on those communities.
Paul was an employee of Continental Can Company in Albany, N.Y., in the 1970s, before becoming the owner of the East Greenbush Liquor Store and East Greenbush Car Wash in the 1980s, retiring in 1995.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Catherine (Glass) VanWormer, with whom he shared many cherished years. Paul was a proud father to his sons, Paul D. (Marianne) VanWormer Jr. and David G. (Kim) VanWormer; and daughter, Debra (Stephen) Pratt. He also leaves behind five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. His sister, Marilyn Page, also survives him.
Paul was predeceased by his parents and his brother Gerald VanWormer.
His legacy of service and devotion to family will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who mourn his passing. Friends and family are invited to call on February 4, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., in the Wm. J. Rockefeller Funeral Home, 165 Columbia Turnpike, Rensselaer. A Memorial Service will follow in the funeral home, at 12 p.m.
